So...in 7 days I've had 3 transmissions blow in 3 different Jeeps. Last Wednesday after dropping my daughter off at school the AX5 in the YJ went taking out the T-case and rear driveshaft. I had it towed home and decided to tag my 81 CJ till I found a replacement for the YJ. Fired up the CJ Monday morning to warm it up - heard a squeal and a pop. I looked underneath and there's a chunk of T150 case missing and fluid pouring out. LOL. No fixing that one. No problem...I'll drive the wag for a week or so till I source an AX5 and a T150. On my way to dropping my kids off to school today the T-case chunked on the wag. Another tow.
Oy! Frigging Jeeps.

WOW! Killing an AX5 in a Wrangler is actually kinda hard to do! They are surprisingly stong and held up well to the abuse we fed one via V8 swap.
The Peugot trans originally in my YJ...not the same story! :-(

You have to be thinking AX-15....the AX-5 was a holy pile of absolute crap. I went through two in my YJ before swapping in a 258/T-176.
And how the heck did it take out the t-case and rear shaft? You doin wheelies with that thing or something? :)
Talk about bad luck...wow man that sucks.

Yep, you are right...I'm thinking AX-15. That's what I get for reading the forum at work and trying not to let the boss see me!
Since it was an AX-5 consider it a blessing to be rid of it.

Well....like all AX5's sooner or later I lost 5th gear in it a couple of months ago. I've been using it as a 4 speed and keeping the speed around 50. No warning last week - took a turn, heard some noise and nada. When I pulled over the rear driveshaft was wasted. Transfer case not responding etc. Maybe it was a combination of things - u-joints. Regardless - trans needs rebuild or replacement. The transfer case would require an inspection and a new driveshaft sourced. Jeeptransmissions.com quotes $700.00 for a reman AX5 with a 5th gear upgrade. Anyone heard of this 5th gear fix?
I can get a spare t-case for the wag for $150.00 from jeeptransmissions.com. I just don't know if I feel like throwing any more cash at the gas guzzler. It has a new motor, tires, brakes, rad, shocks, exhaust, etc....Hate to scrap her. I have a 208 sitting here. Maybe I will research that mod.
I've already sourced a reman T150. I'm going to fix the CJ first. The YJ will have to wait a few weeks as that's going to be the biggest expense.
Thanks so much for all of the offers. It is greatly appreciated.
Why did I switch from Toyota trucks to Jeeps again all those years ago?

Ironically, the AX-5 in your YJ is the same Aisen 5 spd used in many '90s Toyota trucks.
