wont go into 4lo with truck running

can anyone help me? I have a 87' J20 with a 727 and 208, when i try to put the transfer case into 4lo with the truck running in park it grinds like crazy so what i have to do is put the tranny in neutral shut the truck off put it in 4lo put the tranny back in park and then start it, is my trasfercase shot? or am i doing somthing wrong?

My owners manual states to put the transmission in neutral and while rolling 2-3 mph shift into 4Lo.

My 88 will not go from 4 lo to 4 hi without grinding. The trans is in neutral. I have to turn the jeep off and then shift into 4 hi.

I thought the 229 came in 87..or is that just the wag's? Rhino..you should be rolling in gear..very slowly..and then move the lever up into or out of 4 lo with a swift, friendly movement..and when that doesn't work..just do what you do..

my J10 shifts VERY easy into lo, but then I have a T176, I just stop, put the cutch in, and pull the t-case shifter back. goes in easily with no force needed.

And the J20 never got a 229, 229 isnt a 3/4 ton rated case by any standard.

And the J20 never got a 229, 229 isnt a 3/4 ton rated case by any standard.Big diffrence between shifting a t176 and a np208... Really there is not much diffrence in the 229 and the 208. Only real thing is VC and the fact that there is a manual 2wd. Low range is the same and both run on chains. But you are correct, did not come in a J20.

Did just the gwags come with the shift on the fly?? dont know much bout the J series trucks, I know that if this is not engaged that will not go in 4 low or high.
