I was in one of the local u-pull-it yards today looking for a AMC 208 and found a Scout with the dana 300. This X-case has a drivers side drop. It looks like a good replacement for my tired and failing NP 229.
Besides the X-case, what aditional parts should I get from the Scout?
Has anyone performed this swap?
With out a doubt, I will have to change the lenght of my drive shaft.
Can you twin stick this X-case?
Thanks!

Yes, you can twin-stick a D300, There are a few places that sell them for the 300's in the CJ's but not sure if they are the same...may have to do a lil modification :D As far as the scout 300, not sure if it will bolt up without mods

If you get it make sure and get all the mounts/crossmembers and shift linkage and the speedometer cable. Yes you can twin stick it, Currie makes a twin stick for the D300. It runs around $130, I'm going to put one on mine when I put it in. Just wondering how much do they want for it?
ive heard the dana 300 isnt strong enough for our heavy rigs.i have one here but its from a jeep i hear the ones from scouts are much better, although im not sure why.

ok i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but: no dana 300 was ever a driver side drop. the d300 was only used in scouts in 1980 and all were, like the jeep d300,a passenger side drop.
what year and model of scout were you looking at? im not a scout expert, but im pretty sure that no scout ever came from the factory with a driver side drop. prolly someone has been swapping stuff in whatever you were looking at,and if you were indeed looking at a scout with a dana300 and its output on the driver side it was upside down. have heard of peole doing this, but it doesnt make sense to me.lotta work to make an xfer run upside down,id rather swap the front axle.
anyway, the scout d300 and scout d18/20 shares the "texas" pattern of the jeep d20.
to use this xfer on a jeep 727 you will need to swap out the trannies tailshaft and adapter, and the donor scout d300 will have to come from a scout 727,since the input gear on the 727 d300 is unique. kind pointless, since the jeep d300,which is much more plentiful, will bolt right to a 727 with no mods, cept for a front axle swap to match the pass side front output. also be aware that you will have front driveshaft clearance issues with the big fat 727 pan at stock ride height.

mark,a dana 300 is a dana 300,doesnt matter if it comes from a scout or a jeep.
they say that the output is weak.however i wheeled one for a long time with 38s and no prllems.
anyway, the scout d300 is simply more desirable since it shares the texas pattern and therefore is interchangeable with the d20 if the correct input gear is also used.
in a cj5(where wheelbase is a big concern, there is not a shorter,or lower geared combo than a cj t18 and scout d300.therefore,cj5 owners will pay big $$$ for a scout d300.

Another difference between the scout and the jeep D300's is that the jeep D300 used a aluminum tail housing and scout used a cast iron, like the rest of the case. I have seen a 80 Scout in a yard near me that has a 727 and a D300 that is the round pattern and not the texas star. Could be a swap though.

actually,pc,the best way to tell that you are looking at a scout d300 and not a scout d20 is that the d300 will have an aluminum taishaft housing and shift tower, just like the jeep 300. the d20 uses an iron shift tower and tailhousing.

I am pretty sure you are right. The fact that I had the rear drum on my D20 confused me. I always thought the Scout D300 had a cast iron tail housing.
Remember when I was looking at them about a year ago, you told me to take a magnet with me to check the tail housing. I use to have the post but I can't find it now.
