i just bought a 72 cherokee chief with a 76-83 360. it has a three speed auto tranny but im not sure which tranny it is. im a chevy man but i couldnt turn down the price.any help would be appreciated.

im also having problems with this tranny. it will go in reverse but i have to let it idle up into drive

It should be a GM TH400. ya see, with Jeeps, everyones happy becuase they're made with everyone else's parts. :D

I agree, TH400 (GM product!). As far as drive, your torque converter may be bad . Check into a rebuild or replacement. :mad:

finally got the title about two weeks ago and it is a 76 cherokee chief not 72

it sounds like the front pump regulator valve is varnished up like its been sitting for a while or else the front clutch lip seals are rotten if its been sitting for a long time change the fluid and filter and see if it helps if you can drive it stay close to home for awhile if it is the lip seals they could free up or they could tear if the trans works better when it gets warmed up then it might work out if you can find a bottle of motor purr (red) put it in the trans and it will act like a new one it will remove all the varnish
