i'm installing a new timing cover and flow kooler water pump on my 72 360 with about 20k miles since a complete rebuild. cover was decent when installed but was leaking when inspected closely. a new kit was purchased complete with the new oil pump kit. the question i have is what is the proper priming procedure for this? i have some tell me to leave it dry some say to pack it with assembly lube or vaseline and others say to submerge it in oil(really messy)first which will not allow for a leak-free seal upon completion.
any ideas? i just spent way too much time polishing it to want to dunk it and puke oil all over!!

I always use vasoline and then once installed and before cranking engine it use a old gutted distributor and a electric drill to prime the hole system. A large flat head screwdriver with handle cut off will work too but takes mor skill.

thanks to all who responded to the oil pump priming issue. when it's completed i'll post a photo of it on this forum. thanks again guys! i already polished the offy valve covers and the offy intake so it should look as nice as it runs with the polished timing cover!(exterior is camo'd to hide the dents but tastefully highlighted by some off road pinstriping [bush scratches] i guess i have to have something clean on the thing?!?
