Levi's seats

My brother's AMX has the Levi's interior package and as usual, the seats are ripped. We're looking into getting the seats redone but from what I've seen the Levi's material used to make the seats doesn't last anyway. Is there like a thicker grade of denim that can be used or should he expect to redo the seats again in a few years?

I've seen several one owner, garaged, babied CJ's and Cherokees with less than 50K on the clock and the seats are still trashed.

Anybody here have some input? The local fabric shop wants to charge about $500 per seat and $1000 for the back. Does this seem a bit steep or what? When I redid my 69 Charger I paid $500 for the entire interior kit from carpet to headliner.

Yeah, $2000 seems WAY to high to cover the seats... Keep in mind though that I have never priced it out before. I did get leather put in all three rows of a GMC Envoy for $1100 a few years ago though.


As far as durability goes, I brought this up a couple years ago. I would probably use a tougher denim like Carhartt. AND, if I could find some Carhartt denim, then why use Levis badges? It would be much cooler to stich some Carhartt tags into the fabric instead of the Levis buttons. It probably wouldnt be too hard to find some Carhartt stickers to replace the Levis stickers too...

Well, given that Levi has not made anything in the US, in a number of years, I would go Carhartt anyway.
The fabric was never denim, not sure what exactly it is/was but it certainly was not Levi cloth as used in pants ... I wonder if a cotton denim has issues even worse than the stuff Jeep used ?

If there is an upholsterer on here, maybe he can fill us in on if denim would work, I assume Jeep used something else because it was better.

Going back to the stock material is even a bigger joke , unless you have a museum vehicle you are doing..

I figured on re-doing mine in a heavy denim. I save my old jeans for this reason. I want the back pockets for door pockets. I'm sure there is a heavy cotton denim that could be used for the seats.

That crappy grey stuff you see alot of in street rods looks heavier than what a good denim would be.
Not sure why Jeep used that cheapo denim. I'm glad Levi's made them stop using the badging..Maybe it is the all cotton thing :confused:

I know that on the Levi's CJ's, the material was a denim-looking vinyl and not a "cloth". Since a top was only an option, they had to make them more weather proof - or I guess weather "resistant" is a better word.

A friend of mine found a shop that got ahold of an NOS roll of the tan Levi denim look vinyl and quoted me $750 to re do the three seats for my CJ-5. They included sewing in the Levi buttons from my old seats.

I love the idea of a Carhartt interior. I even saved several Carhartt patches off some old coats and Carhartt jeans that I've had, for just that reason. If you go to most any fabric store, they sell cotton "duck" cloth like Carhartt uses, and it's not too expensive. I'm betting it wouldn't be too difficult to sew up your own seat covers and hog-ring them right over your old upholstery.

I've already talked to Carhartt about getting material from them, no dice.

Frank has the right idea, get your own canvas "duck" material and have it done. It would be a lot cheaper than trying to replicate the Levi's interior. BTW, Levi's said no as well.
