Hi, My husband is out in the garage trying to figure out why my 92 jeep cherokee laredo. 4 wd, automatic transmission shakes bad. It isn't all the time, just happens sometimes when I hit a bump and sometimes when I don't. It doesn't happen much at lower speeds but has at 35 mph. It feels like the thing is going to shake apart when it happens. so far he hasn't been able to find anything that needs replaced. Maybe there is something he hasn't thought of? It's our first jeep, we bought it used just a few months ago (the problem came with it), so he doesn't have much experience with non chevy products. Thanks for any help you can give me.

well, first he should check drivelines, ujoints, moto mounts, tires, etc.

then you should check out the NAXJA forum. The members of this forum tend to be most knoweddgeable with FULL SIZE jeeps (of which your 92 is not. The NAXJAguys can prolly be more helpful.

Hi sks - a '92 Cherokee is not covered by this forum. Jeep recycled the "Cherokee" name for the class of vehicles, like yours that are "XJ"s. This forum only covers the older, larger, "full size" Cherokee, as well as the Wagoneer and pickup truck, all called "SJ"s.

You might try the Cherokee forum at Jeeps Unlimited, http://www.jeepsunlimited.com ... maybe others here will have suggestions about other boards.

best regards  Tim

hey well if u just lifted your xj then it could be just an alignment. cuz i know when all of my buddies and including myself when we lifted our tj, xj, or zj our frontends would just go crazy sometimes and all we did was just get it aligned and it cleared up the problem. but i would still check out everything else though too (drivelines, u-joints and so on).

having done what the rest of the members have suggested check your steering stabilizer it is the shock absorber looking thing on the front of you diff. it connects to steering I had one of the brackets break on mine and made it shimmy like a belly dancer on pay day

I get the Jeep Shakes real bad at times too. You know, if I haven't driven one for a few days and start to go into withdrawal. If I sit in the driver's seat it helps a bit but the only real cure is to go for a drive. Please .......don't judge me for my weaknesses....

A bad track bar, tie rod ends, loose lower control arms, no fluid in a steering damper, just have to check it all.

I had that problem. Above 35 it would shake your teeth out. Had the tires balanced and found out one of them seperated from the steel belt, had to replace one tire.

Sounds like Death Wobble

Check your tire balance ( as stated)and all your front end components for slop....

DW is a known result of front end suspension and/or tire problems.

Try the other boards mentioned above for better exptertise with the smaller type Jeeps....they may have the answers readily available for you....

yes....... www.naxja.org/forum (http://www.naxja.org/forum) is a GREAT website.

as for the XJs......death woble is very common on them. it has been said but I will said it again because it is EXTREMELY important on XJ...balance your tires!!!!! this si the most common cause of the shakes on XJs if they have not been lifted or off-roaded.

sks ... Welcome...

DEATH WOBBLE is a DANGEROUS violent shaking in the front wheels that can happen to almost any kind of truck. Death Wobble will happen more often in trucks that are lifted and have larger and heavier than stock tires. In a few cases it is a very difficult condition to fix.

Death Wobble will damage a lot of steering and suspension parts quickly.

... Check the shockabsorbers, all bushings, steering box, TREs and ball joints etc. for looseness and wear. Check the run out of your tires and wheels and the balance of those tires.

... Sometimes Death Wobble is caused by a particular tire and wheel combination, if so adjusting the caster could be helpful. If you have another set of wheels and tires or can borrow/swap a set with a friend you might give that a try. Just swapping wheels front to rear can be helpful. Tighten every nut and bolt. Try a new or a dual steering stabilizer.

... One fix that has worked for some people when nothing else has worked is to add a small amount of positive caster and try it out. Continue adding some positive caster until there is no more death wobble. You may also notice improvement in steering control.

I had that on my first waggie, lifted 4". turned out the u-bolts were loose holding the axle to the springs. I had two places look at it adn couldn't figure it out. took it to a place with old style lift from the frame and not tires. noticed it first off.
