Does anybody know if a 360 from a 1981 Dodge power wagon will bolt up to a B.O.P TH400 from my 78 Wag? http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/confused.gif

I was offered a freeby running long block... not to replace mine, but to use... maybe... while doing a thorough rebuild on my 360.

I know alot of things are different but the bolt up is first and foremost.

thanx

No, it won't bolt up. Your '78 should have an AMC-pattern TH400, not a BOP-pattern one, but the Chrysler LA-pattern bellhousing is entirely different.

Of course, there are all sorts of adapter plates you can spend $$$$$$ on to mate anything to anything, but that ends up costing more than getting your existing engine together...

OOH, OOh, I only wish too. Too bad we don't have a 80's model with the torque flight 727. It can be replaced with a same trans from any Dodge Powerwagon or ramcharger for about a $100. at any pull your parts. That's why I miss my beloved Powerwagon (someone smashed into it in a stolen car when it was parked outside one night.) I still have a garage full of Dodge performance goodies from it. I may end up buying another one since my wife always takes the Wagoneer now "no one cuts me off in this beast". Oh well at least the minivan has air.

What can you connect to the tranny out of these things? And what kinda goodies are available? My motor is new, but someday . . .

Beats me what's in the 81! (OK OK, 360 w/Edelbrock, 219, 3.31, 33's, no fuzzy dice)

Too bad I sold the damaged truck. It had a 360 with flat top pistons a 340 cam, holley intake manifold with a worked Thermo Quad 4bbl ( I could never get the Holley carb jetted right). Hedders, A 727 tranny and a NP 203 transfer case.
You feared NO evil in that truck.

Does it still have the original flex plate?
They are balanced to the motor.

They came with np203's (full time), Np205 (Parttime). And they are plentifull and cheap at the bone yards around here.

hey bob, what are the differences in chrysler engine bolt patterns?

a guy i know was telling me that he slid a chrysler 318 right onto an amc bolt pattern th400.i dodnt personally see it,but he was telling me that the chrysler(at least for the 318) and amc bolt patterns are the same.

of course, its not as easy is that. you still need to connect the engine to the torque convertor. we reasoned that an adapter flexplate could be used to mate the 727 jeep convertor to the chrysler engne,or possibly just simply use a chrysler convertor-i betcha the input splines are the same on the 727 for amc or chrysler. im not real familiar with the th400 convertor, i dont know what youd have to do to use a chrysler engine on an amc pattern th400,if you used the chrysler flexplate, you hade to use a chrysler starter...

i dunno...chrysler engines are big and heavy,anyway...

Heck, he may be right; I've never personally compared the two, but it's certainly not something I've ever heard of. AMC borrowed many things over the years, but I didn't think they ahd borrowed a bellhousing pattern.

If they did, that would open up all kinds of interesting swaps for the FSJ's; the early-Chrysler Hemis apparently used the A-engine bellhousing pattern... http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif

Like I think I remember there being a Wagoneer at the junk yard with that spacer that goes between the engine and the trans still there (engine was gone).. I should go by there and get it and line it up with one of the Mopar blocks.
OOOOH a MOPAR WAGGIE.
Man! How will I sleep tonight?

Stotty, 318s 360s are the same. I swaped out a 318 for a 360 in one of my Dodge trucks.

Some one I work with told me that the 318 and the AMC 360 have the same pattern. He said that he put a 318 in a javelin, or some thing like that. I will have to talk to him today and find out for sure. I will post when I find the real scoop.

Did you ever find out anything on that swap?

ROTFLMAO I am sure after almost 2 years this question has been answered. Check the date of the original post. Anyhow in the event it has not been answered........AMC is a stand alone bolt patern, no other matches. ;) ;)

WOW! This is old! I don't even know if that guy is still around or not. And I am sure that he did some mods to make it fit. This is funny.

Did you ever find out anything on that swap?

You CAN put a Dodge 318/360/family engine into an AMC car fairly easily. AMC *cars* in the '70s used the TF727 with the V8. Therefore, all you'd have to do is fab engine mounts for the Dodge engine, get a Dodge version of the TF727, and drop it in. All the linkage, etc... would work for the trans. Same crossmember mounting, etc...
