I have been a Mopar guy for 30+ years. And this is the first AMC engine I have ever been into. I didn't really know what to expect. I have to say I was pleasently surprised. External Oil Pump, Nice size ports and valves, baffiled oil pan, intake valley pan gasket, nice beefy rods. This engine made me feel right at home. Its kind of a cross between a big block and small block Chrysler. Very nice, I did however think the Power Steering Pump Bracket was kind of overkill. :D

They knew what they were doing when they designed most of their stuff other things maybe not so much.:rolleyes2:
They just need a little extra care and love and they will be happy for a long time.:)
I have always wondered how beefy they would've made a trans had they ever been able to afford it.

I've never torn down any engine, period. So, I'm definitely interested in what your rebuild plans involve and most importantly, what Jeep is the 360 going in? In time, I want to get into mine for the fun of it and at least swap in a bigger cam and 4bbl intake/carb combo. Of course from there the list starts to grow...

Educate me.

What's so exciting about an intake valley pan vs. just two intake gaskets, one on each side?

IOW, what's the difference and why is one better? Thanks.

valley pan keeps the hot oil off the bottom of the intake, reducing heat.and away from the pcv baffle as well.

Ristow hit the nail on the head. No hot oil on the intake=cooler intake, which means denser fuel/air mixture. N2O does the same thing, only on a much more extreme level.

A valley pan is a little thing, but its the little things that count.

Nothing much to talk about. freshing up the engine. rings, bearings a good valve job, and a RV cam. New oil pump kit, and thats about it. It is going in a 1978 Wagoneer.
