I would like to remove the smog & emissions crap from my off-road only 360 in my 88 wag. What exactly do I remove and what shouldn't I remove? I'd like to make the engine compartment look alot more simple without the mess of vacum hoses and wires.
Help!

leave the pcv system in there. leave anything vacuum operated alone that you want to keep. brakes are a good example! but you might want to ditch the cruise control. smile.gif if you remove the egr system and keep the oem carb you might have mixture issues.

If looks are what you're after then yes, you'd be removing the smog pump and plumbing, the air tubes to the exhaust manifolds, and as SM wrote, anything not installed as a safety item, i.e, brake vacuum. Keep in mind that if you remove the air tubes the bolts that attach them to the manifolds are hollow and will have to be filled with something like liquid metal. Otherwise they will blow fire into youe engine compartment and sound/run like crap.
If your plan is for more power, and the choice I would go with, is to simply swap out the stock 2bbl with an aftermarket torker intake and 4bbl. The only emissions part that robs power form the motor is the air pump and this is minimal. With the addition of the 4bbl, the noticable increase in power will negate ANY emission device.
Make sure all of the vacuum tubing is in good condition and doing it's job. A malfunctioning EGR valver will do more to rob power and make mpg suck than anything. Good luck.

I'd keep anything you pulled off and try to keep it in good condition. A rig that's been stripped of it's emissions stuff is worthless to anyone in a state that requires emissions test. Just in case you ever want to sell it. Or even restore it one of these days.
