Hey guys, I'm a newbie to this site and the FSJ world. I am trying to find a solid replacement for the BW 1339, is it better to switch to a centered rear with say an NP205, or maybe a t-18 with the offset rear???

i'd go with a dana 20 just swap out the output shaft and the adapter and good to go..very little modification..but i also like my 1339 with the parttime kit in it that may be an option for you too...

A "solid" replacement for a BW1339 is a <tadaaaaaaa> a BW1339. You will have to either also swap the tranny, or completely disassemble it to swap the tailshaft if you want to go to a D20 t/case. The mounting ears have been known to be a little weak on the D20 adapter, also.
The BW1339 is not a bad case. Just be sure to do your maintenance. Why are you wanting to replace it??????

I was told that the case would not handle tires over 33" in any hard wheeling. I would like to run 38" after I install an SOA. Can the 1339 handle the larger tires with the MM part time kit??

Is the adapter for the d20 case a weak point? I have had several "adapters" on previous jeeps give up their innards under stress!!! Also, does the part time kit eliminate the 50/50 60/40 built in splitter (the knob in the glove box???)
thanks for the input!

Yes it can with a Mile Marker part time kit for around $500...
Mark (Above the law) ran 42's on his W/T for a long time with a P/T QT unit.
The chain will be the weak link... I ran 39.5's with my QT until I swapped in a D20 twinstick.
the lifespan is shortened and must be checked periodically.
When you get ready to tackle your SOA... hit my site... ;)

The knob in the box will control operation from 2x4 to 4x4 lock after the p/t kit is installed.
I have snapped 2 D20 adapters so far and think I have found a way to stop the carnage...I enuf on my plate right now to keep me busy... but when I come around to doing the mods... I will be posting the progress.

Does the part time kit eliminate the clutch assembly in the case, and therefore eliminate the need for the special lube???

Yes the part time kit gets rid of the clutches.

Donzi: i ran my parttime kit for over one year with 33's and a powerful 401 and i dissassembled it not to long ago and it showed NO wear at all..the Milemarker kit is top noch in my opinion..

If you are looking at the clutches as your weak link, I would not worry about them. Once they wear, the LSD becomes an open diff, but you will not notice a difference on the road. And you can still lock the central differential if you need. I drove a 78 Cherokee with 38" tires and a QT for some time and never had the slightest problem. I would recommend to drive the thing until it breaks. It might surprise you! :D

I have been running a part time kit in mine since 1983 or so. You get lock out hubs for the front and I use Dexron tranny fluid in the case, now. Lots cheaper to change fluid , so it gets done. I think that was a reason these cases got a bad rap. The high cost of the special fluid caused alot of people to neglect fluid changes and chain slack checking. As a point of intrest, in the '70's and '80's, the Quadra trac was the preferred T/case for desert racing. Lots of guys run over 33" tires here and flat wheel the wee out of thier rigs.

I'm running 36's on my choptop with no troubles, I do have a spare t/c I keep around just in case. I also have a d20 equipped rig and I definately like the lower lo range of the 1339.

Cost? $40 in fluid every 40K miles... It will surely break the bank!

As much as I love my QT, I'm looking ahead to a high-torque engine combined with 38" tires, so instead of fixing up my QT, I'm going to an NP205.
Thing is, to effectively run anything over 36" tires, you should upgrade axles as well as the transfer-case, unless it's just a show-truck. I think Todd has pushed the limits of the D44's, and found the 38" tires to be too much, at least out back.
Up to a 36" tire, though, the D44's and QT can work just fine. It's going above that which usually requires an entire overhaul.
