Hi All,

I just signed up for IFSJA. I've been an xj guy for about 10 years (I've had 5 of them!). Last week, I bought my grandfathers 1980 j10. It's got the 258, 4 speed, dana 44 front, amc20 rear (I believe). She isn't much to look at, but I look forward to wrenching on her some. Grandpa bought it new in 1980, daily drove it until 1991 and parked it. For the last 17 years, he would start it once a month in the driveway, and drive it once a year to get it inspected. The interior is very clean, almost new. The exterior needs some work. There is very minor surface rust in a few places. About 10 years ago, he put rustoleum (brown) on the hood and the top of the cab to prevent rust from spreading. From the picture, it looks like the whole thing is rusted out, which it is not.

I plan on cleaning/restoring this one. This will be a pavement princess, and will probably never go offroad. I've got a beater xj for that! I want to bring this one back to original condition, as it would mean the world to my grandfather. This jeep was his pride and joy.

Thanks to this site, I've already learned a LOT about these things. I look forward to being a part of the FSJ community.

Gonna leave the 258 or swap in an XJ 4.0?

Welcome from rust riddled N.J. Nothing better than a green SWB J-10 with a brow. That's a great drivetrain you got there too. Should hold up great for a long time.

Welcome to the site. The jeep looks really nice.

I see you are signed in with RU and are from VA. do you go to Radford?

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome.

To answer the questions.

I'm leaving the 258 in it. It runs great, just doesn't stop. If and when it ever goes, yes, a 4.0 HO will be going in. No, I don't have one on hand :D

The truck has lived in Vinton VA since new. He did tell me when he ordered this one, he has some rust protection stuff put on it from the factory. I forget what it's called (there is a sticker on it, I'll find it) It seems to have worked!

The brown is rustoleum, and the whole truck will be green again in the next 6 months.

As far as another one.... I'll get another one when I start needing parts for this one:D

I may have sounded like I got this from Grandpa's passing. That is not true...he is 78 years old and doing very well. I didn't want to give the wrong impression on that...

Yes, graduated in '04 from Radford.

I grew up in Pulaski and went to RU back in 88. It's changed a bunch since then.

Yes I have had the parrothead beer...landshark lager:cool:

I also found "Duneburger" down in Whalebone part of Nags head to have the best burgers in the whole OBX. I spent a week down there in June.

In fact, the reason my grandpa bought this truck to begin with is to surf fish down at Oregon Inlet. He loves it down there, but hasn't been since about 1990. I hope to take him down there in the j-truck when I get it restored.

Welcome to the madness.

I just got a 1980 J10 like yours that I call The Junkyard Dog. It's not in such great shape as yours is.

We lived in Norfolk for a while when I was growing up. I have some fond memories of many trips with my dad to Hatteras in the 60s. A couple of those trips included his father. I love that wild coast and the great surf fishing. During that time our family truckster was a 57 Ambassador wagon with the I6. My dad's fishing buddy for many years had a 59. It had the 327 and we would switch off on who's Rambler was making the trip. I remember a couple of those trips we all had the fishing bug so bad the skinny peddle was nailed to the floor most the time on the 327. LOL, I would usually have a nest in the back somewhere because the seat was folded down and whole back packed with camping and fishing gear. Last time I was there was Fall of 98 with my newly lifted 88 GW.

I wish you the best in your restoration. Seriously, that body looks good. Show more please...

From 1980 it's probably Rusty Jones.

I'll get more pics up next week...I'm out of town at the moment.

I've ditched the camper shell (it was cracked through and had a few quarter size holes in it), and ordered some parts. Next week or two I'll do some brakework, and get it inspected/on the road:)

That's how I got into Jeeping. Riding the dunes with my grand-dude looking for fishing spots.
I was down there with my dad in my 'Burb back in '98. Last few times I went by boat. Haven't been in a few years now.

Give a shout out when you plan that trip. We can meet at GRUMPY's (aka OBX-AUTOMOTIVE) and go wet a few hooks.

It has a sticker in the engine bay saying "body protected by body guard rust prevention".

I've got new seatbelts to install, a new windshield washer reservoir being shipped, new window wipes coming... the next few days will be fun.

Update:

I've spent quite a few hours wrenching here and there over the past few months. It now runs, stops, starts, etc. as it should. It has new brakes, new radiator, new shocks, new (to me) wheels and tires, fuel pump, fuel filter, parking brake cables, vacuum hoses, pcv stuff, and a million other "little things".

Its still in need of painting, but that is going to be put on hold as my wife and I are expecting our first baby any day now.

Anyway, time for mandatory pics.

Update:

I've been sanding an hour or two here and there for the last 3 months. I finally got to lay 3 coats of base (almost 3, ran out of paint, will finish it up Monday).

I need to touch up the bumpers (herculiner), and am going to also roll on the fender flares and bottom section of fenders and doors in herculiner. All in all, even with orange peel, I'm VERY happy.
