Which T-18s/T-18As have the granny gear? I know they switched the model # from one the other at one point, but not sure when. Thanks peoples.

to my knowledge, all fsjs got the granny gear. id try and verify before handing over any nonrefundable cash, tho. unfortunately, only way is to count input turs to 1 output turn. noting in the casting #s will tell ya ratio.

I though the Cherokees used the close ratio T-18.

i dont think so.post 1980 used a t176,but im pretty sure all fsj t18 were wide ratio. kryel is using a 6 cyl t18 from a late 70s chero, and it is wide. our other friend is using entire drivetrain from a 79 chero(360,t18,etc.) and it is also wide.have not talked to anyone yet with a close ratio in or from a fsj.

I just looked at the tech sections and say about how they switched for the old T-18 designations to T-18(close) and T-18a(wide), but doesn't say what applications. Have a friend who has close ratio T-18s in both his cherokees, but they could have been swapped in.

I have a T18a in my 75 cherokee. Granny gear is unsyncronized 6.32:1 (you have to rockk to get it in sometimes) reverse is like 4.2:1, its also un scynroed, if you are barely moving you cant put it into reverse. 2nd gear on the T18a is 3.09:1, 3rd is 1.9:1, 4th is 1:1. This tranny is FAR from being a close ratio. I personally like it tho. I can snap your neck in almost any gear. I cannt start out in 3rd gear. Supposably the T18a wasnt available until 76 cherokees. Mine was a custom order from the factory tho, so I guess thats why it has the T18a. The standard T18 had a 4.3:1 1st gear if i remeber right. Which is still really low.

Stuka shouldn't your T-18a have a 7.** something reverse, I know both of mine do.

kaiser, very possible. I know its ****ed low. Now that I have a tach (just installed today) I will compair rpm's for speed. I know that I can back down super steep hills, and will only go like 3mph with out the brakes, just compression.

Just for addition, the J20s used the T-18(wide ratio) from 80-83 as well if everything I've heard is correct. These were ONLY behind a 360 due to being ONLY in the J20s of those years, but would have a 2.6x:1 low range in the NP t-case too, for some REAL grunting!

I have to side with Scotty on what I've heard with the T-18s in FSJs....that ALL were likely the wide ratio. I haven't heard of a close ratio in one of these(stock) rigs yet! The "little" Jeeps(CJs) used the close ratio until '76 or so. THEIR '76-79 models are the "coveted" T-18a with wide ratio, and we all know THEY get more "publicity" and "news" than our big rigs, so much of what I've read on the T-18s comes from the CJ perspective, which to me isn't all that informative!

Reverse SHOULD be a good 7:1 or so....pretty close to the 6.32:1 in 1st gear, at least more or less. My 78 J10 with 258 has the wide ratio T-18 and I LOVE it....I'd love to find another with this combo!

Anyway....if anyone knows otherwise about close ratios in FSJs, let us know, but I'm like Scotty, only heard/known of wide ratios in these rigs!

Take care...

Ok, guys. Thanks a bunch for the info.
Got one question real quick: Ok, I spin the input(?) shaft and count the number of spins to one spin on the output shaft? is this right? How many should I have for a wide ratio T-18? a little over 6?

Thanks.

1st gear on the T18a is 6.32:1, so the input shaft (engien side) will spin just over six and a quarter times for every one turn off the output shaft (t-case side)
