well... i had a little time to kill today, so as i was passing by a new body/paint shop in town i stopped in for an estimate to paint the wag.

i have to replace the crunched door, remove all chrome, etc. they will replace one rocker panel, fix some very minor dents, cover the woodgrain and trim, and prime, seal topcoat, and clearcoat.

guess how much.

4100+ !!!!????!!!!

thats only a few hundred less than i paid for the moose 6 years ago!

well, i got a chuckle out of it anyway.

rattle can fades to fast. for about 50 bucks more you can spray it with good paint.

I used plastikote brand rattle cans to repaint the bottom half of my wag. Bought the cans from advance auto I think. The top half of the wag had been painted by the dealership we bought it from back in '92 to make it look all fresh and shiny but they never painted below the woodgrain and only the bottom half was looking bad. I just couldn't resist painting the bottom half for less than $20, luckily it turned out nice.

Dont laugh :D but I brush paint most of my stuff. The trick is using Penetrol to lubricate the paint. Done right with a couple of coats and wet flatting imbetween you can barely see a brush mark. I'd choose this over rattle cans any day.
Right now I'm considering POR15 as part of the process for the rust that I have. Should fill somewhat although not sure how well it will wetflat if at all.

Of course you won't get that shiny final clear coat effect to this method.

Glad I have a buddy that has a body Shop. I stripped my 70 wag down, and off the frame and gutted the interior, it is just a shell. No way could I afford a paint job like that if I was to have it done anywhere else. not to mention all the extras I am adding!!!

POR 15 dries very slow. The thicker you put it on the slower and smother it dries. I use this on my axles, interiors and frames to give them that ground smooth look. You can also use it with fiberglass sheets to patch small floor board holes. Haven't tride it on body work yet, but thinking about it, would make a nice backing for bondo.
Real messy stuff (go to the bathroom before you start) and it won't hold up if exposed to UV on a regular basis.

Thanks greasyjeep, I have already used it extensively underneath etc, just now pondering my body exterior.

Just to clarify in the instructions it states that it will discolour from UV exposure but will not be mechanically affected.

Right on with the Bathroom tip sure is messy stuff. :D

I personally prefer krylon, it dries more evenly. You can also shoot rustoleum (thinned) from a primer gun.

Tee Hee- This should make 250!!

I'm here in San Diego, I can take my 86 GW to TJ and get it done with body work for about $800. I have to bring the woodgrain. Originally posted by SpruceMoose:
