1. trans/x-case mounts are shot
2. eng mounts are shot
3. adjust x-case linkage.
That's the most likely...

actually,i dont think there is much you can do to adjust the linkage, specially if you have the "U" box. you can check it,tho,by putting it in 4lo,disconnect the shift rails and see if you can push them in any more.

more than likely what has happened is that you have broken or worn springs behind the detent balls over top of the shift rails.

the "quick" solution(what a friend does) is to have someone ride with you and keep his foot on the shifter when youre doing somethin silly ;)

the real solution, sorry to say,is to pull the xfer and copmpletely disassemble to replace the detent springs. youll also want to replace seals and any questionable bearings while youre at it.

I had this problem on my wag and found that the hole was not big enough and body and frame flex was causing it to get knocked out of gear. My solution for that weekend was the Larry Locker (Jeepguzzi with his foot on the shifter) I have since built a twin stick shifter for FSJ's with a 3" body lift. I also found that in the thrash session to get the motor and tranny in, I forgot to put the nut on the tranny mount
