Which years and models of W/T FSJ's had a drivers side drop?

Sitting Bull, you are correct.1980 it was.
Big Bad Jon, the reason for the switch was due to Chrysler buying out AMC/Renault(sp?) and installing a new version of the Quadra-Trac t-case known as New Process 219 (NP219)which sat behinde the Torqueflight 727 tranny inplace of the GM Turbo 400.
The t-case swap was not the best idea, the tranny swap was d@mn near equal, the Torqueflite had a slightly lower 1st gear ratio.
You'll find Jeep Corp 20 rearends in some Chrysler made Waggies too.

AzFrank, just for tech sake here. ;) I don't know why AMC went to np x-cases in 80 which was also the reason the pumpkin swapped sides on the front axle(and went centered rears) but it didn't have anything to do with Chrysler buying AMC. The swap to np x-cases was as stated above in 1980 but DC didn't buy out AMC till Aug 1987. And no...no Chrysler built FSJ's ever had an AMC20 rear axle. They were used in the 80-early 86 FSJ's. In late 86 they went back to D44 rears...."before" DC bought AMC in late 87(88 model year was already in production then).

also, the np 219 is a decent case,IMO. not neccessarily better than the BW 1339,not neccessarily worse, just different smile.gif one big advantage it has is thpt the rear output is "straight thru" and the chain only drives the front wheels. one disadvantage is no part time kit available, however a part time 208 is a direct swap.wich brings us to another advantage: great swappability amongst other np cases. from a 207 to a 242,and even the d300 or dodge 205, lots of choices smile.gif

Alright, so 80+ gee, leaves me a helluva lot of options. I will find one though. God knows Ive got awhile with the upcoming winter and having no insurance on it.

Granted some the NP boxes are not an improvement in strength, but jeep had to upgrade tcases from the old dana 20 and QT. Jeep also promoted it's "selectrac" full time 4WD systems and I don't know much about other full time tcases but my guess is that there weren't many options available at the time. They probably wanted a 2wd, full time 4wd and low range, good oiling and reliable case. What I never understood is why the driver side drop, didn't chevy NPs drop on the pass side?

Also, you would look for 80-83 WT cherokees and 80-87 J10 and J20s for the wide trac axles.

The NP203 (fulltime, selectable if I'm not mistaken) was available and used through the 70's. AMC was trying to improve fuel economy for one and aluminum just plain weighs a lot less than cast iron.

BIG BAD JON: I'd say your best bet for those axles would be a 80+ J-truck. The only others would be 80-83 cheros, not as common as the pre 80 versions with the passenger side diff.

I think some of the shift over to the driver's side may have been to make room for the catalytic converter.

Hmm catalytic converter...glad the PO cut that sucker off! Would a transfer case mated to a GM TH400 mate up to a AMC TF727 tranny? If so, Ill consider changing it over to passenger side drop. Although, it being on the passenger side makes it alot easier to predict which rock would hit it.

The thing is, Ive got a deal on a 79 or 80 W/T Cherokee Chief that has no motor. The guy wont let me take apart the drivetrain, so he offered to sell it to me for $300! Lil bit of surface rust, no steering column, lots of extra parts, no grille or headlights, most of the black interior is there. I think I would be crazy to turn down this offer. Ill bet I can get my friend with his M715 to haul it over to his father's house since I have a little yard.

There is also a Gladiator out there with a whole lot of useful parts. Thriftside bed, wicked bumpers, a PTO winch, an engine that could probably be revived(seems to be arranged in a V-engine), a manual PTO transmission, and good glass. He will probably want that sucker. I would get it, but I prefer automatic trannies.

I will keep you guys posted...Hmm...maybe I need to change my signature...
