Does anyone else who has a post-AMC Waggie have the problem with their fuel gauge fluctuating really, realy bad?

The gauge on my 88 will change at least half a tanks worth every time I stop and then start off again.

Is this common? All the other SJ's I've owned have been AMC models and none of them had this problem so I didn't know if it was a Chrysler problem or not.

Is this just as simple as a needing a new sending unit?

THANKS!!

Your sending unit might be going bad. Remove the carpet by the front of the driver's cargo fenderwell. Drill out the rivets with a brass bit, and remove the round plate. You will be looking at the top of your sending unit. Check to make sure you have a good ground. If not, you can replace it. We sell them for 86-91 Grand Wagoneer 14-6003 for $65. IFSJA discount price is $55.25. www.bjsoffroad.com (http://www.bjsoffroad.com)

It's very common from what I understand. My original one always fluctuated a lot. Then when it went bad it would stay pinned at Full. I got a new one from the dealer and it fluctuates a lot as well. Even with the fluctuation it's very accurate when it gets near empty and the low fuel warning light works great so I don't worry about it.

My 81 is all over the place. When we were wheeling a couple of weeks ago and had to back track the way we came (the planned route was blocked) I was a little concerned when it went to 1/8th a tank. One it got level it sat around half a tank.

I just put the most gas in mine ever. 16.602 gallons. On a flat surface the needle just covered the three prongs in the 'E'.
