OK, I may finally become a FSJ owner again. My question is what axle ratio would be in a 1980 J-20?
I found a 1980 J-20 with 360 & a 4-speed with military tires and beadlock rims for around $1500. I could drive that to the FSJ gathering this fall, Right? :D

most likely it has 373's or 354'and if your lucky it may have 409's,who knows though with it haveing bead locks and all maybe someone changed them out, sounds like a good deal for 1500.00 heck the beadlocks alown are probaly worth more than half or that,if you pass on it i would definatly be interested in the beadlocks, would even send replacement rims, e-mail me at sandmanb@bellsouth.net if you pass or want to deal on the beadlocks,...brian

I am going to look at it tommorrow. If I don't like the wheels, I may give you a deal on them. The owner did say it had a posi rear, so that's a plus.

My 83 J-20 with 360 and 727 has 4.09s.
Aren't beadlocks illegal for highway use?

I would think tractor tires would be also, But here in the middle of Nebraska you see tractors and other farm equipment on the highway all the time.

Well, I suppose if you could convince the Sheriff your J-20 is actually a repainted Massey-Fergeson... :D tongue.gif

Bead locks are not DOT approved because if the bead lock is not kept torqued properly it could blow off just like a split rim on a semi or old ford.

I have the 1980 Jeep TSM. 3.31 was standard, 3.73 was optional, it does not list a 4.09 option for any jeep that year. I would buy a 1980 j-20 and pirate the tranny and axels for my chero.

Does anyone have the info for a 78 J20?

On paper, at least, the '74-'79 J-20's came with 3.73's as standard, with 4.09's optional (but not with the 401). The '80-'88 J-20's were only supposed to come with the 3.73's.

Of course, that is on paper, and has no necessary connection to what may be sitting in your J-20 today.

I went and looked at it yesterday. NO THANKS!!!
It has 3.73 gears, which would be fine, but the lift was scary. It has 6inch peice of square tubing for lift blocks in the back. The front had a redneck engineered shackle reversal. The front spring mounts had been lowered about 6 inches with angle iron welded in a criss-cross for reinforcement. I would be scared to even drive it home. It did have beadlock rims with some very bald 36-12.50-16.5 tires that said military on the side. Oh well, I found a 79 J-10 Honcho that is relativly stock for $750. Maybe I'll go look at it today.

Brian, I don't know what brand they were. They were gray steel rims 8 bolt with bead locks. They may have come off a Chevy military truck?? They weren't Hummer wheels. I sent you an E-mail with the owners phone#.
