transmission noise (comanche)

my dad's comanche has a transmission noise and i thought someone here could help. i really don't know how to describe the noise so i will just say what it does. it does it only when the clutch pedal is out. it will also do this if i coast the truck with pedal pushed in. i have been told that the clutch was bad and this other guy said it sounded like transmission was bad. anyone have any ideas?

Kind of an intermitent grumbling/grinding noise? Does it have the 4.0/5-speed combination and is a pre-90 model? I recently had the same thing after an engine swap to my '89 MJ... and it eventually went away.

Otherwise it could be time to start looking for an AX-15 from the '90 or newer XJs and YJs
