I'm trying to get a T18 Cherokee to swap a Chevy V8 6.5 liter into? Will a 6 cylinder/T18 combo work or do I have to keep searching for the V8. They one I found is missing the front axle too. Would it be hard to find an axle? Junkyard jeeps how do you get rid of all the rat crap without getting sick?

if you plan on using a chevy motor, why not usea chevy tranny?a 465/205 will require no adapting and give you a much stronget xfer case.
on the 6 cyl/v8 t18s the difference is inthe input sahft. the 6 cyl sits further rearward inthe engine compt, and thus this t18 has a shorter input sahft
.the v8 sits further forward to clear the break booster and heater box. its input shaft is longer to keep the shifter from being under the dash. the v8 t18 has bout a 6" spacer between the tranny and bell, while the 6 only has a 1" spacer.
you coulkd use either version with either tranny. a friend is running a 6 cyl t18 behind the 360 in his cj.im running a v8 t18 behind my 258.
if you use a 6 cyl tranny in a FSJ behind a v8(amc or chevy) it will move your shifter forward, prolly requiring some bending to clear the dash. not a big deal.
shouldnt be too hard to find a front axle,i wouldnt think...

Where would I find a 465/205 would that be able to handle the torque of the 6.5 Diesel? When you so no adapting would I have to move mounts for the tranny and xcase?

Inquire at the junkyard for a 4x4 version of the 6.5 liter truck similar to the one you have your engine out of. You will almost surely need to have your driveshaft modified, however I would think that would be easier than trying to adapt to the T-18, which is a great stock Jeep tranny, but not all that special when compared to late model HD units.

I think most of the 6.5s used the NV4500. Not sure when the 465 stopped. Does anyone know?

Yeah, I guess the 465 would be older, but the NV4500 is also very good, and there are a couple people on here familiar with that conversion. I was eventually going to swap in a 350 SBC and the 4500 when my 360 died.

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and put in the NV4500. Now to find a 95 and up NV4500.

The NV4500 doesn't require any electrics does it?

I would think your biggest challenge would be the hydraulic clutch. Other than a reverse light and a VSS (speed sensor, which you don't need), there aren't any electronics that I know of. I think most on here have said that the '96 and up I think trannies are better than the earlier ones, although some of the earlier ones had lower first gear. I'll see if I can find the post a member sent to me on this tranny.

What's up with the hydraulic clutch? What will be the challenge?

What transfer case came with the NV4500 in 96 GMs?

Will I need a passenger side or driver's side drop vehicle?
