I will start by saying that I am new to leaf springs. I have a 72 w/ BJ's 4" springs, no sway bar or track bars & D44's. I would like to get more flex out of them.
- I have let them brake in
- I have loosened the bolt torque on spring hangers
- If I jack the front tire up (about 12") my spring only compresses 1 1/4"
- I do get more flex offroad
- am running soft shocks
I am thinking of removing the smallest leaf from the packs, would this help much?
Am I just being a pain in the *** and this is just what leaf springs are like?
My only other experience w/ leafs is w/ 3/4 ton & 1 ton trucks.
Thanks for the time.

Springs have been on jeep for about 3 months. Driven and flexed for about 2.

So, who has experience or advice with removing leafs from the BJ's spring packs...

Or sould I just be happy that no response is better than a flame job :o

I would keep driving and wheeling it the way it is. it will more than just 3 months to get the springs to really flex.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. In my experience the short leafs have a lot to do with the stiffness. I remember having an 83 WT cherokee with a 4 inch spring lift that rode like a lumber wagon.. In the front and rear I removed the shortest and next to shortest leaf and lost only about 1/2 inch but the ride improved 100%. I am guessing that they would flex better. Also if they are clamped tight the leaves can't slide against each other making the rate higher and less flexy.

Thanks for the info, I will run it. :)

You said you broke them in already, what does that include? Turning your jeep into a slinky on a twister type trail for multiple hours would do better than driving for a year. It's like bending a wire until it breaks. You can barely bend it a million times to get it to break, or you can bend the crap out of it and it'll snap off quick. Flex the dog poo out of them for a long long time, numerous times, and the stiffness will fade to semi-stiff.

I will flex them and am glad to hear they will get softer.

They will but it's never going to be like the newer rigs, 74-91.
We have shorter springs and with the extra arch of the 4" lift, every inch counts, there's just less to flex for us..
There were no BJ's or Hell Creek lift springs when I did my 4" re-arch w/extra mainspring. I'm quite glad they have since un-arched about 50%.
I also removed the lower leaf, mainly for height, but it does help it flex a bit more.
