Time has come to start a new thread.

Dates

October 18-19 some will be there the 17th come early stay late easy as that.

Camping information:

KOA Las Cruces New Mexico, I have talked to Leah the manager of the Las Cruces KOA, we will be getting a group discount of 10% and they will be putting us all together unless we have a bigger than expected turn out then they will fill the area saved for us and move others to other places in the park. Here is a copy of the last email I received.

I have an area that we've used in the past for groups. This area is our premium tenting area, which provides electricity, and our RV water and electric section. Four sites will offer grassed tenting, and five sites will offer pea gravel tenting. Each site can handle up to two small tents and no more than four people.

You can check out our park site map at either our website, www.lascrucescampgrounds.com (http://www.lascrucescampgrounds.com/) or at KOA's website, www.lascruceskoa.com (http://www.lascruceskoa.com/). The section that I am talking about are sites 88, 90, 92, 93, and 95-99. As you can see the Kamping Kitchen is over in this area, which will allow for food prep. Additionally, there are BBQ grills at your disposal.

We are willing to provide you with our 10% group discount. Each site is $27.65 for two adults, or are $37.18 for four adults per night. These rates include the discount and taxation.

Should you need more than eight sites we can spill your party over into basic tenting (in particular sites 76-79). Since these sites do not offer electricity, each site will be $25.27 for two adults, or will be $34.80 for four adults per night. Again, these rates include the discount and taxation.

Cabins are available. Each cabin can sleep up to four. Each cabin will be $52.44 for two adults, or will be $61.97 for four adults per night.

As for RV sites, we have many rates that your party can select from based on their rig size and their individual needs. To provide accurate quotes I would need to know the type of rig (fifth wheel, travel trailer, motorhome, motorhome towing), the length of the rig, if the rig is designed as a 30 or 50 AMP unit, the number of adults in the party, the number of children 13 and over, and the number of children 12 and under.

Pets are NO problem as long as the following rules are followed. As per our insurance, certain breeds have been identified as having a history of unfriendly and aggressive behavior to both other dogs and to humans. We therefore DO NOT allow Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and Dobermans within our park. Please note: partial breeds of these three breeds are NOT allowed. Additionally, pets are not to be left unattended outdoors or tied to park water faucets or electric pedestals. Pets are to be leashed at all times, and must be cleaned up after. We also ask that your pet be kept out of the restrooms, store, laundry, and pool area. Lastly, pets must be kept from barking for long periods.

As for those in your party that have trailers. Yes, we can accommodate parking for some trailers. In order to provide a more definitive answer I would need to have more of an idea of the number of trailers you'd need parked. In example, in your best estimation are your anticipating 6 trailers, 10 trailers?

I look forward to working with you on this hopefully annual adventure.

Please email me any additional questions you might have.

Regards,

Leah

Everyone is responsible for making their own reservations. You must mention you are with the International Fullsize Jeep Association to get your discount!!!!! You will have to pay for the first night when you make them to hold your spot. You will find a map in the email.
Please PM me with your camping reservations and the spot you have reserved when completed.

Other camping is BLM land. It is free plentyfull and probably a great place to party if I had to guess. No restrooms, except for a tree, no showers, so if you do not like primitive camping I would say stay at the KOA.

I will update this post later with a map of the area so everyone knows where the trail head is.

Please confirm if you will attend here. T-shirts are still in the open, but plans are for now, for every driver whom attends will get one tshirt. You show up you get a shirt no cost to you!! I will be working on the them with Jaime next week. But I need to know who will be coming so everyone will get one, I am sure we will have some extra for anyone who shows up last minute.

If there are any questions do not hesitate to pm me or email me. This is gonnnnna be a good time!!!!:drivin:

This is going to be a list of who is coming. Let me know if your plans change, this is based on recent activity and interest. If your name is not on the list pm me and I will add it or remove etc. This will help us with the T-shirt purchase.

Are most people planning on staying at the KOA, or are there still people thinking of camping out at the trails?

I'm willing to stay where the biggest group is staying, so we can have the most fun!!!:dancingbanana:  :alc:

I believe there are a few of us planning to camp at the trails. I know we are. I'm not big on campgrounds and rules!

And where did all the pics from the original thread go? There was good info in there.

Michael

I think the camping on the trails/KOA is 50/50. I personally will make a reservation at the KOA so my wife has a place to crash.....that has showers etc. I would assume the party would be at the trails....KOA does have rules.....

As far as the other thread, it was getting wayyyyyy tooooooo lonnnnnnng and I was getting questions almost daily that were answered allready there.

So, a new thread was started to clean it up a bit. Just to see who is "truely" coming and see where they will be staying etc. I pretty much know who will be there. In the original thread I counted about 18 that said they would be there in the beginning and now I am down to about 10 which is the fsj event world.

If you need pictures of something I will be happy to find them for you. If you have anymore questions just shoot me a pm I will try to find the answer for you.

Wow, I leave town for a dozen days and you guys go post crazy on the other thread and create a new one. If any recon work needs to be done, I can probably run up to Cruces. The only down side is that it now looks like I am moving to Phoenix sometime soon, maybe within the next 30 days. I was really looking forward to this get together, but oh well.

Phoenix isn't too far away. It's under 500 miles I do believe.

It's ok, "life is what happens while we are busy making other plans".
;)
I'll do the Cruces KOA spy pic's (their pic's suck) over Labor day.
I'm sorry, I have this fear of tenting on gravel with a nude Mulberry tree for shade, might be better than that, if not, I'm a hotel guest.

Still working on my CWI/CWE testing dates.
Friday and Monday are not looking that promising.

Dad gum it, I'm coming, Wag or no Wag. I have had no down time to work on the steering, but I have made guru's of money, so I recently broke down, and said "I'm going to drop the pig off and pick it up with full hydro installed", but then it wouldn't run good enough to even load on a trailer! Now I have to figure out the sporatic engine before I do hydro. Drop back 5 yards and punt, hoping to get the ball back and make some yards...

Looks like I'll reserve a spot at the rules place with showers, and if I pass out in a camp chair elsewhere, oh well.

Oh ****, I hope you don't have to come to Tyler...I'd get a whoopin for sure! I'm not going to be a passenger, dang it. I'm determined! It cranked yesterday like it's been running fine all along (???) so I loaded it up and towed it to Austin to get new PSC hydro steering. We'll see what all I get done before the trip, but it'll be wheelable at least. Maybe not rock-bashing-worthy, but close enough. PS, the superduty towes like a dream with a little boost from my little chip buddy.

Getting closer guys. Everything is looking good for me. I have moved back to El Paso and hope to make a recon trip in the J10 just to re-familiarize with the location of the trails. I'm going to pick up the Sandgorgon first week in Oct. which is still in DFW.

i have found out some news bout cruces!
another member of our local club said a bronco group is going to be having a gathering around the same weekend:o so we may have some wheeling friends to join up with:thumbsup:

i was gonna go over to cruces today, but the friggin rain didnt stop...so i didnt make it...

...i was gonna go over to cruces today, but the friggin rain didnt stop...so i didnt make it... I just got back.
22 hours on the road, 11 hours in the truck, 560 miles and it rained almost the entire time except at the Cruces KOA.
I'll do the pic's after some food, a nap and some beers.

Confirmed for site 92, October 17-18-19
I just got off the phone with Ralph, Leah did not hold sites (I guess we have a small communication breakdown).

If you are doing KOA you should call now.
575-526-6555

I'll get back to the pic's (after beer) but 88-93 are in grass, 95-99 are on gravel, shade is better in 88-93.
All have picnic tables, next to 93 is a very large grill, most sites have their own grills.
(it's over 40 pic's so it will take a bit).
All the sites are acceptable IMHO, even 76-79.

Tad

Ok, let's start with the ammenity pic's:
...I have this fear of tenting on gravel with a nude Mulberry tree for shade, might be better than that, if not, I'm a hotel guest. I don't usually quote myself but I think that, combined with the pic below is pretty darn ironic.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/graveltenting.jpg
It's actually very nice and clean and I think with the lower October temps it will be perfect.

The office and bathrooms are not very far away (this is not a huge tent camping KOA like Ouray, it only has 17 tent sites) maybe 50 yards at best.
Bath and toilet facilities are on the other side of the building.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/laundry1.jpg

Both the bathroom and laundry areas were clean and modern.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/facilities.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/laundry2.jpg

There's a break room with free coffee, books and games for killing time like most KOA's.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/breakroom.jpg

For the tent sites that have power it's a 30amp 110-125V drop, I guess you need an adapter.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/powerdrop.jpg

This is sort of far away but in case of severe rain yoou could get a decent size group under there.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/shelter.jpg

If you look at this map:
http://www.lascrucescampgrounds.com/images/kampmap_lg.jpg
Most of the following is the tent area from 88 to 99.
This kitchen area is a bit off on the map.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/foodprep1.jpg
It's actually dead center and the 3 grills are right next to site 93.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/foodprep2.jpg

Specifically:
Sites 88 and 90 are huge. More than enough room for two large tents.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/tent88.jpg

92 and 93 are on the end.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/tent92to93.jpg

Here's an overall look of 88 down to 93.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/tent88to93.jpg

Sites 95 to 99 are on gravel:
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/tent96to97.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/tent98to99.jpg

There will probably not be any leaves on the Mulberry trees in October. It's already in the 40's at night there, there might not be any grass by then either.
I think that takes care of most of the KOA stuff but feel free to browse the folder location.
http://s149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/

This view is to the North.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/viewnorth.jpg
Beyond that peak is where most of the action takes place as I recall (feel free to correct me).
The following map might give some perspective, nothing is real far away.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/Map1.jpg
The arrow is the KOA, the circle is the hotel area, or most of them, nothing is real far apart here.
The X is just west of the airport, where "Off Broadway" is located.
http://www.webejeepin.com/Trails/New_Mexico/Off_Broadway.htm
I want to check this area out as it has potential for going North to the other trails (some of them) and West back towards Silver City.
Most of the action breaks off West of 185/Valley Drive which follows the river.

Michael will remember this.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/Airporttower.jpg
We kept seeing it to the South last trip.
I would think that the two areas connect.

Here's another way to picture it.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/map2.jpg
Michael and I were in this area.
http://www.webejeepin.com/Trails/New_Mexico/Hopping_Jalapeno.htm
Several trails start and converge off that Dona Ana 320 area, I'm sure we wound up South of Jalepeno.
(Michael, that's the one where you wrote "185 N Shalem Colony Tr. Left")
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/tadsal/Trips/LasCrucesKOARecon/Map3.jpg
Comparing the bend in the river at 320 this looks very doable.
(just random thoughts)

i cannot remember how to get over to the dona anna's...the dona anna mnt's arent fun when wet! ask me some time:eek:

Michael and I did not go through a gate as I recall.
Straight west off Valley Drive, 320, back Shalem Colony Tr, then into the wash.

Michael, correct me if I am wrong:
The only gates I remember were coming out, not going in.

I am looking at the Box Canyon/Off Broadway connection for myself. I'm not sure anyone wants to do that since it is to the West.
There are several old Forts/Settlments out that way that interest me.

Like you said Sam, Broad Canyon is a bit to the North, at least further North than Michael and I went, I still think it would be a good trip for folks.
I think the area Michael and I were in was through Apache Canyon, the large gravel pit is to the South
I do not really care about the stuff on the East side of I-25, it looked cool, but short.

Cool Tad thank you for taking the time to do more leg work. Ok, since there are about 10 different ways to get to the trail heads, and Sambo you know most of the area.

Where do you all want to make our central meeting point? From the looks of it the KOA does not seem to be a bad place? At least for the first day anyway. Since it has a solid address and all.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

I will be making KOA reservations on tuesday.

On the 18th, I am fine with Sam leading the pack.
I'll do my best to keep up.
On the 19th I am going up from the West side, by the Airport.
I'll tromp alone if needed, I do that a lot.
I may wind up back at the KOA, I may wind up North towards Nut, NM.
Not sure, that's enough plan for me.

This sounds good. I want to do some exploring on the 19th as well. So Tad....if you will try to keep up on Saturday then you must not be bringing the Nissan.....:drivin:  Now that is greatttt news. I think getting more familar with the area and doing the main trails is a must on Saturday, so Sambo and his crew can head that off. And then we go from there on Sunday. Just play it by ear, it is always fun that way! Thanks again Tad.

I'll be in the ChopTop (as long as I can figure out this 2D Projection running rich issue).
If you search (I've been on all sorts of pages) I think you will find we were at the North end of Tabasco Twister (obviously not in the hard stuff like the Chile Challenge areas) but we were right there.
This may not copy/paste well.
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&c2coff=1&safe=off&q=Apache+Dam+Las+Cruces,+NM&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=image
Just search for "Apache Dam Las Cruces, NM"
Zoom in, you will see the old Dam, the Gravel pit and the leve we were on top of, we were like a 1/2 mile off and going South would have worked.
It would have been harder, but we were there on the North end of things.

EDIT:
Since we have power I will bring a small 110V Air Compresor and Welder.
I'll be the guy with short hair that does not smoke anymore

if every one would give me a pm about their rig i would appreciate it! if possible;) cept bill&janie i know they are gonna try and rent a jeep
but we may have more seats for others...
this way i can choose a trail most are capable of running!
i know micheal, will, jaime, mike huber and myself can run the harder stuff!
i dont want anyone to get scared...i love hardcore trails but i dont always run them...i want everyone to have a great time!

i was thinking about amatista ledges, doable for most except a stock jp,cause one really needs one locker...amatista is one of those trails that you can make it as hard as you want or easy as one would want:thumbsup:

oh tad btw the "blue moon" bar is up near broad canyon, good place for brew after the trail:eek::D

That looks like fun, but it's over 10 hours down and back, and that's if the 'ol Wag gives me no problems (pretty reliable for the last 20 years, but I'm not confident it'll stay that way.) I guess I'll have to just settle for Moab and Ouray and local stuff, dang it.

Yep, if you scan down with that page you will find the gravel pit and levee. There are way more roads and trails out there than we thought, almost all look to possibly connect.

If you punch in Faulkner Canyon on that map (it's just south of Broad Canyon) that's one I would like to connect heading south all the way out by the Airport.

We weren't included in that grouping, but that's a mute issue. Michael, your aware of this. Unless something/someone greatly improves over the next 4 weeks, Bill and I will be unable to attend.

Alright folks, I called the KOA today and reserved site #93 for 17, 18, 19. Full hydro is done except for the supplimental reservoir...will post that jazz later. Once I get it back in my garage, some minor adjustments will be made, and I'll be ready. I will have stock motor mounts for the trip, though, so I may not thrash it until the end of the trip, but if you call me names, it might happen anyway. :p By now I should be a pro at swapping out the mounts anyway. PS, I have at least 2 seats open, but if you're over 6'2" or so, you might get bruises on your knees.

Great job on organizing and researching this stuff, guys! It's a real help for those of us that are disconected from the outside world for weeks at a time...

Anyway the truck is ready to head over to Copperhead, I'm just waiting my turn. I'll be getting the trailer up to Lubbock this weekend so that problem is solved as well. Yeah tell me about it, the truck is just waiting and has been for about 1.5 weeks. They have a small shop so it is easy for them to get back logged, but I'm going to be on their @$$ to get it done ASAP. It really shouldn't take them long to set up the rear axle though, couple days at most. Then some small detail work and it should make it out there. If not then I can just be the camera man for the trip.

Yeah thats kinda whats been going on with it currently, just the small things. The good news is it goes in first thing Monday morning and it should be done with in a couple of days. Everyone knows to bring anything they're going to need personally. As far as a group goes:

Firewood - sounds like it's covered
Cooking - grills are there, I'll bring grilling utensiles, can opener, welding gloves & iron skillet. Charcoal, foil, plates, forks, etc can be bought with groceries.
Camp chairs - I have a few extra I can bring
Coolers - I can bring a couple extras for camp food/drinks
Electronics - I'll have an inverter, but the campsite has electricity, I'll bring my digital camera, I'll have my laptop to load pictures/videos on to keep our memory cards empty, I have a CB, but I'll probably install that in Las Cruces
Recovery equip - Michael has a winch, I have a bunch of D rings and a 20k tow strap, I bet others will have plenty of straps/equip as well

What else?

Tad
10-13-2008, 10:51 AM
What else?
I'm bringing a small air compressor and have been contemplating tossing on one of our smaller 110V FCAW units.

Yesterday, I completely re-wired my F ing trailer last night due to electrical grimlins, but now I have working lights (all of them, not just some anymore) and 4 wheel brakes! Then I blew a line off of the orbital on my new hydro steering. I got that figured out today at work, and all I need is a hose clamp and to refill the fluid. And I filled up to the top with 3.45 diesel in town.

Today I'll work on it for a long time, then finish up tomorrow since I'm off work. I literally made a list of the crap I need to do, so I'll check it off as I go. Wish me luck!

C'mon James, get the J10 ready!

How many trailers will we have? We may have a parking issue at KOA.

I know 2 for sure coming from Tx.

I was kinda wondering about that too. You think mine will load up on yours? That would free up some space.

mine will be on a trailer. still trying to talk her into staying at the koa. she thinks it will be too cold, so it may not even matter. went wheeling with sambo over the weekend for a test run. other than the open headers it was pretty nice. i put some exaust on her today so that is fixed. it was over heating a little bit but i dont see anything wrong so i guess im not going to worry about it

I think you all are good.
There is several acres of undeveloped KOA trailer parking just to the rear of the camping area, talking 100 yards at best from the tent sites.
I even mentioned this when I was there and was assured you could all drop back there without issue.

It will be fine.
I am the biggest cold wus I know (I already have my heat turned on here).
We'll make it happen for her.
It's going to be great fun.

Wow finally on the road! Yesterday I had all day off from work to get the wag ready. I went to the **** auto part store 4 different times and it was raining all day, but I managed to fixed hydraulic hose, purged air out of steering system, changed out the motor mounts (man I forgot how much that sucks), tranny mount double checked, replaced wheel studs on front axle, fixed brake problems on front axle, replaced upper radiator hose, fill radiator full of fluid, install tie downs on battery, loaded up and packed up!

Now we're on the road with my baby typing beside me and we're flying down the interstate, cruise set on 73 and about to meet up with Michael and head west!!

Well no Jeep, new $570 wheel bearing on my pickup, couldn't skip class this morning, plus some other personal family issues, I tell you things are not going good for me right now:banghead:, but such is life and you gotta make the best of it.

So I don't think I'll be making the trip this year after all, it just isn't in the cards for me anymore.

Dang it!:banghead:

I am thankfully back here at home, with a subway samich in my belly, a viewing of "Zohan", and a highly needed shower.

Today, Sunday, the wife and i set our jaws for another day of fear, diff-destroying rock avoidance, picture taking, laughter, and new vistas. Then a rock bearing a grudge vented it's aggression on the sidewall of my front pass. with a balding spare 30" tire in place of my massive 33", the awesome wifey's resolve began to wane, taking with it my confidence, leaving me with concern for our safety, as well as the safety of the remaining wheelers. So i begged off, much to the relief of the wife, and i shook hands with the remaining drivers, thanking them for showing me what's possible, what's not, for educating me, and allowing me to join in on the fun. After two days of some challenging wheeling, we were beat. I have a newfound respect for the guys from Peterson's that do the week-long tough-truck!

I told a few that i would be blasting them on their own website, so here goes: THIS WAS THE MOST FUN I"VE HAD ALL YEAR, AND THESE WERE THE MOST DIVERSE, INTELLIGENT, HELPFUL, FUNNY, NICE, INFORMATIVE, NON-COMPETITIVE, FOLKS I'VE MET IN A WHILE.
There, you done been "blasted".:drivin:

Boy, did i feel like the dude that brought a knife to a gun fight:

No, i have no pictures the tow strap that was raffled out to me, pretty funny, give the tiny Chevy guy a tow strap:dancingbanana:.

As we all do, i have plenty of pics, mid 300's between the wife and i. I'll be posting a write up of this event for the boys back home in Oregon, so if you'd like to see/read: (http://sore4x4.com/forum/index.php?sid=09989e92ebb21e229023f93a9e4ee092)htt p://sore4x4.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3059&p=30283#p30283

If any "locals" want to e mail me for wheeling trips, that would be cool. Or if anyone has questions, comments, or for pictures: ryanfromnm@yahoo---subject line: IFSJA. (i'm spammed out, and if i don't know your addy/name, the message will be deleted)

Ladies and gentlemen, we had a blast, you folks were awesome, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

Well made it in last night at 11pm, Will had a bit of a delay with the trailer so I caught up with him outside Abilene, I am guessing he got rolling ok since I did not hear from him again.

I will work on some loading some pics today and my videos, I think we should move all pics to the offroad section. Unless we can talk the mods to making us our own section like Ouray and East Coast Invasion....

Slick Willie

Yes, let's move the pics and afterwards talk to the offroad section.

I'm still on the road, we ended up getting a hotel last night at midnight when we were still in Eastland. My front driver trailer tire sheared all the wheel studs  sending my wheel/tire down the interstate beside me. That was a rush! I couldn't find the tire/wheel after 45 minutes of looking, and I just bought that tire last week! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Anyway, we're still getting back, but we should make it.

Dang Will, you are certinaly in the running for the most consistant poor luck prize, but glad to hear you folks are still moving and safe.

Off-Road section will be fine for the pic's and I'll talk with LRRH about putting in/up a Las Cruces section, we normally don't do it for 1st time events but I'm sure we have enough interest and folks are already planning for next year.

Actually, I tightened them before I left Tyler, drove all the way there, and they were still tight before I left Las Cruces.

We made it back today finally at 1:00 with no more problems, although I stopped a dozen times in 4 hours to check lug nuts and tire pressures. 1530 total miles for my truck (GPS / corrected for tires = 1702 miles). Now the work will begin. It was good to meet all of you, Melodye and myself had a great time. Thanks to everyone helping me with whatever. I'll get my pictures and videos loaded soon; first I have to unload the Waggy into the garage (somehow) and unpack my cram packed truck.

Good to hear of the turn out! Sounds like there were some challenges and a lot of fun! The pix are great. We want to be there next time and also want to support this event. We had the week off but finances dictated we cancel a few weeks back. Probably just as well because we were both down with a nasty flu bug for the whole week.

Mid 70's during the day and cool at night, but not enough to be uncomfortable...great wheelin' weather....in fact, Monday it was cloudy most of the morning and started raining for about 10 minutes right after we got Irving off the trail...I would have really hated pulling him up a muddy hill
