What year is the best year to get a 401 from? I have a '90 GW with a 360/727/NP229 set-up. My 360 is worn out and my T-case is ready to go, I am trying to make plans to rebuild all at once. Is there any mods to be expected besides Flexplate. Are the dimensions of the motor the same as 360? No radiator clearance problems. Can I use all the accessories off the old motor? Carb? Is the exhaust manifold going to bolt up the same to my exhaust system? Any help would be appreciated.

I am not to sure about the motor.
However, a good new used transfer case would be the np208 out of a Jeep. The np208 is better because it doesn't use limited slpi like the np229 does so it is a little stronger. And it is mechanically shifted, not by vacuum. I did the same swap and I got mine for $200 out of an 84 Jeep Wagoneer Limited. Sorry about the motor question.

The 401's were in 74-78 FSJ's. If you go earlier you'll have to find a Rambler with one. The external dimensions of the motor are the same and "most" things will swap over but I don't know about your smog stuff.
Since you're in CA you might want to check with your smog nazis there first. It used to be in CA that you can't swap in another motor in your rig unless it was offered in that year(or later) in that model.
