Well let me give you the quick run down and maybe I could get some advice from you guys.
1. Put Catalytic conv. from the 89 grand onto the 87 cause it would not pass deq
2. rebuilt carb, wouldn't pass
3. rebuilt bottom plate throttle shaft bushing on carb, wouldn't pass
4. replaced bottom gasket on carb due to major vacuum leak, wouldn't pass
5. take it to deq last night after carb and everything was looked over by mechanic, wouldn't pass. When I drove it to deq there where two problems.
A. The Jeep smelled of gasoline real bad
B. The Jeep was idling too high
The #'s where this.
THC: Pass 4.0
Me 33.63
CO: Pass 85.00
ME 86.30
6. take it back to mechanic and he was gone. I was let into the shop by my friend who employes this mechanic and so I adjust the carb a bit. I noticed on the top front of the carb there was gasoline all over and could not see where it was coming from so I did not know if something was leaking or what.
7. Take it back to deq and it failed again but now only one out of three failed
THC Pass 4.0
Me 30.30
The Co is now at 60.00 after I adjusted the carb.
So long story short I drove it home and not back to the shop. On the way home I had to open all the windows cause there was so much gas smell I thought I was gonna die. MY Jeep has been at this guys shop since November so I'm done with him.
I was supposed to take it to another mechanic who I trust but I got sick and forgot about it and now I'm broke.
Any suggestions on what you think would be great.
I'm not at the mercy of my fellow Jeepers.

On the emission sheet does it show and other gasses? O2 CO2 HOx? If so can you put them up. Do you have the air injection hooked up?

It sounds like your float level is too high.

Do you have the correct fuel filter? one inlet, and one outlet and one vent? Is the vent at the 12 o'clock position?

I would start from the beginning and set the correct float level first. After that get your timing set right and your idle speed to spec. Then you can properly adjust your mixture screws. The fuel is leaking out of the vent on your float bowl.

It sounds like your float level is too high. bingo, you won the booby prize. I just had a guy who works for Edelbrock come into my shop and buy a new phone so we talked a while about my issue. He was great. He told me I probbaly had dirt stuck in my needle hole and to tap the front of the carb while running with a rubber mallet and that should work because I'm leaking gas out the top.
Get yer money back... Will definately be doing that.
This whole thing sucked. I'll keep you posted with #'s cause here I come deq on saturday.

He is right about dirt causing a bad seat. You said that you rebuilt the carb though. If it leaked before and after the rebuild then either the needle is bad or the float level is too high. Either way it is a fuel level issue and you will see much better numbers after it is fixed.

You'll have to excuse me, I'm very busy at work so what I mean is that the carb was rebuilt but I did not rebuild it. I know nothing about carbs. A supposed professional did all the work. All I did was some of the leg work and replaced the exhaust.

i feel your pain. my 88 hasnt passed yet either. i repaced the carb with another one. the original was flooding over so bad it it fouled #8 plug. once you fix the flooding, change the oil. its loaded with gas. fresh oil will help lower the emissions and save the insides of the engine too. i just picked up a gallon of ethyl alcohol to dope the fuel with too.

Matt, running lean will also raise hydrocarbons. It's unburned fuel from a lean misfire. Sounds like you are running rich though. Save up some more money and take it to scott. He will fix it. He has his own gas sniffer. when he gets it dialed in he will run it through DEQ for you. You get back a running rig with tags and a set of keys.... Sherwood Auto 503-625-5880 I just chatted with him last night...

I know Al. That's who I was going to take it too but got sick. Kinda sad that I know his # to the shop by memory. Scott rocks, and trust me I won't cheap on him again.

Wow, a Duece. How's that Jeep coming along?
When should we hook up and go to Breakfast at the Log Cabin with a bunch of Jeepers. You could have your club guys come and we'll get a lot of people together and pack the place out for a meal sometime. That's fun. We could do some wheelin too.

I've moved to scappoose. I found a place with a three bay metal shop on a 1/4 acre. Not what I had but it will do. The wag is in the middle bay stacked full of parts. I'm trying to get unpacked so I can finish it. I really want it done by the end of summer. New paint, quarters, and LOTS OF CHROME!!LOL
The meeting at the cabin sounds good. I could use a large order of biscuits and gravy. As for the duece, I pick it up sunday. Only 38 hours to go!!
It is sweeeet. I will send you a PM with my new unlisted number. I hope klank passes DEQ soon. Sorry you are having so much trouble with it. I wish I had a gas sniffer. Good tool for troubleshooting. I'll send you a PM....Al...
