I tore out all of the carpeting, seat belts, rear panels etc from my 80 Cherokee. Them proceded to weld/patch the 2 small holes in the floorboards and seal everything so no more leaks. I also put in the new weatherstrip on the doors. Now the question.
1. I want to make this thing as quiet as I can on the highway. So I am planning on using sound deadening material on the floor and in the sidewalls on the back. Anyone done this who might have great suggestions?
2. I am going to replace the cardboard interior panels with either wood or plastic covered with matching carpet. Has anyone done this who might have hints before I start?
3. My wife has offered to purchase new seats for the front for my birthday (I love my wife) And I have seen several FSJ's with other manufacturer seats. I prefer a highback seat. Anyone who has done this have any great suggestions or horror stories?
Thanks in advance. This is the first FSJ I have had that the interior needed major help, so I figured what the heck...

Here's a good thread on seats: SEATS (http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=006227)
I posted several aftermarket seat links in the link. BTW Corbeau does have a seat bracket for their seats to fit a FSJ.

Hey Jim, I also plan on doing this very soon! I'm finally starting to get the mech. stuff taken care of, now I can move to the comfort area! ie, carpet, noise levels where I can converse with people, so my wife doesn't immediately fall asleep when we go on a 20 min ride...(no kidding that really happened, i told her I must have built up a resistance to it. terrible, I know!)
anyway.. i did a search on dynamat (sound deadener), which brought up a ton of past experiences, may check it out. It's $$ but everyone seems to be happy with it.
The other items on door panels and side panels have been discussed, just not sure when, they discussed pros/cons of masonite, lexan, dia plate!, (i'd like to see some pics if anyone has done that), and what was already mentioned, oak panels! btw, that was sharp. I will probably go with masonite, covered in 1/4" batting, then covered with blk vinyl. not h20-proof, but I don't get it that wet, and pretty cheap! Also, you can mount speakers, armrests, fire exting., etc from it.
As for seats: hi-backs are king for long trips! This is a must-do for me! Maybe i'll show my wife this post, and she'll get some Christmas ideas!!!

I just completed this exact thing on my J-10. Complete write up at my picture site. All I can say is the cool-it mat is the best deal for under padding and it has an excellent sound deading quality to it(not to mention excellent heat barrier). If you just cover 20% of the interior with sound deading material (use Cascade brand lot cheaper and works better&easier to install) it makes a HUGE difference. Shhot me an e-mail if a can help any more. I spare no expense in doing mine but i also did ALL my homework.

Just found this B-Quiet Sound Deadening (http://www.b-quiet.com/index.html)
Has anyone used this product, It is less expensive than Dynomat .
Trust me,my brother has been in the stereo install biz for about 10 years and the Cascade deading stuff is the best thing since sliced bread. And it is a LOT cheaper than Dynamat , doesnt stink (dynamat is asphalt based  ) and is about 4 times better at deading sound than Dynamat. Also you dont need a heat gun with the Cascade (you do with Dynamat). :D

Here is a link to Cascade Audio (http://www.cascadeaudio.com/) they offer some good sound barrier products. Here is a link to the Impala SS Forum (http://www.impalassforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000124) which has quite a bit of sound deading information. Hope this helps you! :D

Cool all, thanks for the info. Got the carpeting tonight. Went looking for seomething in a "wyoming Sand Brown" smile.gif Found a big enough remenant for $35.00
Will check around to see what kind of sound/heat deadening stuff is available in town tomorrow, If nothing, I will have to order by mail (oh well)
No real expense being spared here, but I don't really want to spend more on the interior than the rig smile.gif
Again, thanks.
