I scheduled my Wagoneer to have exhaust put on Wed morning. After looking in this forum and elsewhere, the advise is 3" single exhaust. I told the guy I wanted 3" with a turbo muffler. No cat. He said it would kill my power. He said he has been hot rodding and building stuff for 40 years and not to listen to needing 3. He said 2.5 was what I want. I know he can do 3 because I saw his dies and pipe stock. What do you think?? Motor is stock minus the TFI upgrade. I use the Wagoneer to tow with and to drive around sometimes. I will do mods down the road as time/cash permitt. Should I go 2.5 or 3??
Thanks!!

Go 2.5" all the way, If you are stock everywhere else, I don't think you will gain much going to 3". Might even lose some torque. 3" also eats up alot of room, especially when it goes over the axle. Do you still have a spare under there? If so, a 3" may not fit. If you do, make sure it is under there when he does the work.
Do you have a smog pump you can send me???

Mine is going in tomorrow and this guy has run a lot of jeeps over the years, he has benn doing exhaust work for thirty years. I have known him about 6 years and even did my duals on a CJ I had when I brought the waggy in he says duals all the way back is alot of wasted money and time and that I would be better of with 2.5 and a free flowing muffler. I love a mechanic that doesn't just grab your money if its not going to help you, hard to find that kind of honesty these days. I think i'll listen to him. I said OK but I still want a little rumble, he said no problem.

OKAY. Thanks for the advise guys. I think I will go with the 2.5 as he suggested. Sounds like others think it should work too.
Thanks for the quick responses!

Its amazing the amount of knowledge flying around these pages. Got the new flow through muffler got rid of the cat aand 2.5" all the way through, sure sounds good feels better.

I beat this around quite a while before I had my exhaust done on my J10 (stock eng). Basically the consensus was, that the AMC 360, unless you plan on building it to rev, is better off suited with the backpressure that a 2.5" exhaust provides. I did a single exhaust, with 2.5, turbo muffler, and a high flo cat, and it was a considerable gain over the stock setup. Lots more low end torque, and better throttle response, with no loss on the top end either. On the other hand, gas mileage actually went down, because I love the new sound...8^)

OK. I had the exhaust installed. New from the crossover back. 2.5", no cat, turbo muffler. Exits at the same place as stock. It has a mild rumble sound. Runs a bit cleaner feeling. Looks like it should work out well. I dont think I am disappointed in not going with 3". I need more low end than top. Thanks for the info.

I have a single 2.5" setup with a glasspack. Flows well and still lets me get to mid-higher rpm's without to much back pressure. I still have awesome low end torque though. Also has very nice sound to it. Glass packs take a long time before they get their sound...when new they sound terrible. But after 4k miles it really sounds great. And generally they sound better and better as they age.

I ran dual 3" but Y into each other behind the tcase. I have a few mods to the engine. I love the power at both ends. With lockers and in 4H, I can easily spin all 4 in first and second by just tapping the pedal. In 2 wheel, I can punch it in 3rd and get the 35's spinning. I guess it depends on gearing and mods. Cuase I feel like I have a ton of low end power and also can get up and move on the road.

Oh btw, after Y'ing together, I went into a 3" inlet flowmaster with dual 2.5 outlets.

KY: I hope you mean on dirt...if your spinning 4 tires on dry pavement witht he tap of the pedal you gota be running a LOT more then stock...Also a great way to snap axles...

Yea it's on dirt, but it's so easy. There was no way I could clean them with my 258, even with my gears. And I am running a rebuilt, with edelbrock 4bbl and intake, msd, headers and no emissions. So it's alittle more than stock. I dont think I would want anymore low end power, cause I had a hard time starting and making turns in the rain a few days ago. I just bearly push the pedal, and would start loosing it. I guess Im gonna have to get used to it, cuase this is my first v8 in any car or truck. Dennis

KYJ10: Put a few sand bags in the back...helps a lot. I normally through 5 bags of sand in the back (60 pounds each) and makes a big differance.
