Got the lift an tires, so what should I do next keeping a budget in mind to start to make my jeep more capable off-road while still a DD. I want to start a wish list.

Replace the NP228 with a NP208
What is the advantage and what else would I have to change?

locked four-wheel-drive operation in both High and Low ranges....
always a potential that driveshaft lengths will change anytime you change anything in the drivetrain, but other than that, it should be a bolt-in "upgrade". I'm sure some will chime in that the 228 is just as good and just stay away from the 229, and then there will be even more that will say the 229 is fine too.... all preference.
as far as the comment on the throttle body for elevation changes... not really that big of a deal here on the east coast.
I would say a locker if the budget is real tight, or a winch if you have a little extra to splurge on the winch and fabbing a place to mount it, etc.

Locker AND gearing to turn the bigger tires easier.

I just looked up lockers on BJs that $800 for front and $800 for rear. is this right for what you all are talking ?

You could get a cheap drop in locker for under 300. Detroit EZ locker or lockrite. Plus those are very easy to install. Replaces spider gears in the carrier.

Very well said.
The 208 is better for wheeling and off road more than the 228 (1986 one year TC) and the 229.
The 208 is a bolt-in except you will need a longer rear driveshaft.
Fortunately, a driveshaft from a Quadratrac rig is the length that is required.
So, all said and done, if you get a 208 that does not need rebuilt, it should be a fairly inexpensive project.
I would budget $100-150...$250 tops.

I don't always get my projects in the right order but this is what I did growing up my GW. I got the lift first, then 32s within a week in 98. I drove it like that for almost 4 years. With 2.73 gears and open diffs, I learned to pick better lines or not get "over". Sure, the brush guard and Aero tank were good add-ons during that time. Then coming to Colorado, I could not deny the need for gears. I found screamin deal on a set of used 3.73s a 4x4 friend here had and got a Lockrite for the rear in 02. Went through and replaced all axle bearings too. It has lasted pretty good. The 208 was put in a year later after the 229 let go. The 401 went in in 04. This year it was a decent upgrade to an overhauled 208, nice built 727 with lockup and headers with twice pipes.
So, with that in mind, the gears and a lunch box locker like an Ausie or Lockrite should be fairly affordable. Especially if you can do it yourself.
