Hi:
Really want to mount a spare on the outside of a J10. Anyone done this and could post some picts? I just about took my finger off dropping the one underneath since I did some modifications to put a big Class 5 hitch on...
thanks!

Here's a copy of the Craigslist ad that Redmistress posted of a Gladiator pickup for sale in WI:

The fourth picture shows how they used to mount the spare on the outside of the bed on the 60s/early 70s trucks. I have a diagram of this mount from my parts catalog that I can email to you. Have you thought of getting a generic mount that attaches to the inside of the bed rail and puts the tire behind the wheel well ? I have seen these used with success.

One of the cherokees I saw over the weekend had a side mount interior spare tire rack. never saw one before I would Imagine it could be made to work in a J10 bed.
I have a old CJ tub down the barn that had a side mount spare, was just like a steel box. I imagine that could be made to work also..
But I would think you would have to reinforce the underside of the bed..

My J10 has receiver hitches at both ends so I fabbed up a tire carrier to slide in them. Works nice on front but not so great on back as that there is some tailgate interference. I can take a pic of the fabbed deal if you want but it's not much to see.

Wish I had a better pic for you. This is how we ran the spare for awhile. We were able to utilize all the bed space and still had easy access to the tire.

I'm running the factory side mount spare tire carrier on my J2000. It works great, but makes it impossible to see the lower passengers side of the truck in the mirror, and I have some big honkin mirrors!
I also have a write up for the install somewhere on this site, but I think the pics are down.
edit. You can see the tire on the side of my truck in my avatar.
