I am currently getting ready to paint my Wag. But I have no cluewhere to go for paint. I am going to repaint it the original color and just doing the exterior so a good match (not perfect) for the interior is important to me. Where should I go?

you might want to be more specific on exactly what you want....

basecoat/clearcoat? enamel? is it metallic? are you using an HVLP gun?

find a DuPont dealer and get a Nason brand chip chart and see if any of those colors come close to what you want. If so, you can do it really cheap and it will turn out good. if none of the colors are close, you still can get some really good paint for cheap.

I painted an 87 cadillac bro-ham bc/cc with Nason black and bugandy with gold pearl and marbelized the black and did 2 clear/pearl coats and 4 clear coats and it turned out awesome. i did it all for about $300 for paint and supplies. But it was HVLP so i did not have to use that much paint

You have OReilly auto parts stores up there? The larger ones here mix or sell factory packs of urethane paint for around $150 a gallon.

Ok let me be more specific...I really don't know what I need...this will be my first paint job on a rig...Either will have my buddy help who has a HVLP gun or take the paint and truck to painter and pay CASH for a weekend paint job, there are a few that I can get a hold of. I guess you could tell me what I need. To repaint my brow/bronze/semi-matalic wag near to the same color as the original.

if you are gonna do it yourself, PRACTICE FIRST!! and 90% of a good paint job is from prep. remove all trim that you can, take your time and mask off what you cant. make sure you get the right reducer for the weather and if you use HVLP, make sure you have enough air volume.

The paint that the oreilly's down here sells is Nason factory pak, but i doubt you will find your color in a factory pak so you will have to get it mixed but you never know, you might find something close enough for your liking.

are you gonna prime it? do you have any minor dings or scratches that you need to fill?

when i first was learning how to paint, i would find an old hood or trunk and practice from start to finish, including masking off areas, priming, bodywork, and learning about bc/cc. it will pay off, i promise

If you end up taking to someone to paint it, talk to them first about what paint to use. Everyone has their preferences, and a painter will have contacts and probably discounts available to them.

If you do it yourself, basecoat clearcoat type paints are more forgiving of a novice. Metallics are tricky to get laid out even and consistent. I would suggest using an epoxy primer to seal your existing paint. Finally, use a respirator. The chemicals in paint are nasty and can do you some serious damage if you are not careful.

Please pay attention to this part if nothing else.

Any paint store can mix your color using your color code and formula. They are right in asking the guy doing the work what he uses--I can spray PPG, Acme,,M/S, and S/W just fine. Centari always ends up on the floor.

Figure on spending most of a week doing the prep work and sanding yourself in the evenings and w/e. That is where the quality will show when you are done.

Thanks for the info I have been taking my time in the prep work (maybe too much time) I want it to turn out good. I will ask and see what kind of paint they use. Yes I will protect my self from the chemicals of course.
