View Full Version : QT Emergency-drive valve, any springs go in with the checkball?
When I pulled the shift fork cover off, the detent ball fell out, the location for that was a no-brainer.
Now, is it held in place by a small spring?
I found a small spring about 1/4" long in my box of parts on the bench but don't remember if:
1. It goes between the detent ball and shift fork cover.
2. In the hole in the case on the opposite side of the shift fork from the detent ball. This hole is open to the quadratrac valve shaft, the part that moves the shift fork.
3. Or, the spring is not a part of the quadratrac.
Dang, I really need a digital camera...pictures worth a whole lot more than my redneck jabbering.

Most likely, Choice #1 is correct... there is also something (mine has always been missing) on the rear side (the hole you are talking about in #2)... whatever belongs in there prevents the valve casing from moving when the actuator pushes the fork forward... be sure there is something in there to prevent the actuator case from moving.. I had to fab something after I couldn't get e-drive to engage and saw that the housing moved in and out when the e-drive switch was activated... hope this helps... oh yeah.. there's a pretty good exploded view of the QT unit on Quadratec.com... some of the small parts are hard to see though...GOOD LUCK!!!

I just messed with that, I should remember...but I can't. I'll go look tomorrow if no one chimes in...
There is another smaller spring that simply goes between the cover and the case, it is the same diameter but about half as long as the poppet ball spring

The short spring you are talking about does indeed go in the hole at the edge of the case to hold the shift valve in place. Make sure the grrove in the shaft lines up with the hole first.
Thanks Mel~
How about the detent ball, should it have a spring holding it in?

Yes, now I remember...spring goes in the hole below the shaft, then ball. Assemble the shift fork, pads, and lockout ring and put into the case, insert valve/shaft thru fork. Then hold the ball down with a screwdriver or something while pushing the shaft into position over it. Then secure the fork to the shaft with the 2 e-clips...

You nailed it!
The spring below the detent ball is about 3/4" long by 3/32" in diameter. For anybody else working on the QT, follow the directions when your told to "push the ball down with a screwdriver" before you put the quadratrac shaft in; otherwise, the shaft pops the ball into the case and you'll be doing a little dance with the xfer case <literally> to shake that ball out.
How would I know...did it not once, but twice
The other 1/4" long spring must go in to hold tension on the shaft but it doesn't on mine anyway.
