Have been twisting my mind the entire weekend on the next project... and i believe the early sunday morning has brought me some ideas...

i've always wanted am m715... something monstruous, something black, something with a lot of power, and something completely out of proportion in a world where gas will soon be a product for the rich... not yet, though...

so basically, whoever wants to donate, sell for a reasonable price a nice project vehicle, preferable running so that we could go shopping for parts in the us before shipping it back... i'm thus looking for a sain, no rust, good basis M715 with canvas roof and two seats... a lift, big tires, etc... is of course a plus, but we could do that later!

something like this... :D :D :D

and then comes the eternal problem of the power source. you want something with power, but also something reliable... something you're gonna want to trust when you drive 100mph on the highway, but also something smooth enough for some rock climbing...

i've come to the conclusion that the most adequate power source nowadays, compromising 450hp and low fuel consumption is the SRT8 engine found in the current Grand Cherokee's... how hard can that be to find such an engine...

piece of cake, i'd say, as these people sell crate engines for 6900usd

quite some money, i sure agree, but still, you have a brand new engine, lots of horses and 12 months warranty... how bad is that???

now, with that you don't have a transfer case, transmission, decent brakes, etc...

so i figured... , the best thing, would actually be to find a wrecked SRT8, with the full mechanics still ok... (ok i'm willing to replace the radiator... ;) )

so here comes question nr 2: where do we find a used srt8 jeep grand cherokee that could work on this project... if the side emblems are still intact, its of course a plus!!!

this will not do, though...

any ideas are welcome... it's an open discussion!!!:drivin:

I'd like to know where to source a good Hemi too. My mechanic suggested a magnum (not the car) engine vs. a Hemi for ease of maintenance...as I don't know any better, it sounded good to me. He said you can find an engine and tranny for about $2500...then he would charge about the same to install.

I am considering moving back to FL in a couple years...that's when I would make the swap, so I can safely and comfortably drive the rig on the highway at a little better than 8mpg.

So, do tell...anyone...where to source a good Hemi engine?

Its rather simple to sign up on a junkyard parts search. Its like finding a car carrier, you enter in what you are looking for, give your telephone #, and calls will start coming. I found a a 32k mile 98 SOHC 4.0 for our old Exploder SHIPPED for 999.00 and it was beautiful when it arrived.

I would think with an SRT8 and all the sensors and gauges you'd be better off buying a full front 'clip' (dash to bumper cut off a wreck). They cut it, plop it on a big pallet, and drop ship it.

I think an SRT8 would be harder to find than a regular Hemi, no? We had a Dodge Magnum with a Hemi for a while, and it wasn't an SRT8.

Are there good, nationally known/trusted junkyards or websites...there's really only one locally owned yard and they are expensive, from what I hear.

Well the Magnum came in about a bazillion Dodge Durangos so there should be PLENTY out there, shouldn't be hard to find a rear-ended or side impacted one with all the soccer mom drivers of em  :o I couldn't reccomend a particular yard persay..they will list the mileage and condition of the part you request, once you get it it'd be a crapshoot on engine condition. The mag's are pretty stout motors and I can't recall hearing much with problems on em. My bro in law has a 2001 Dodge Durango with the V8 Magnum and even with a ton of miles it has plenty of power and has had zero problems in the 7 years he's had it (enginewise..pretty much the only thing the Durango tears through is tires and brakes).

Dan-That M715 is godlike. I hope you find a nice one and work your magic on it!

I recommend www.car-part.com (http://www.car-part.com)

Easy to dial up a vehicle & find sources for parts and prices. I found several SRT8 engines on there with a quick search. I have had good luck using this as a basis for calling some places and getting good parts from across the country when necessary.

Good luck Dan - keep us posted on your progress!

Or you could find a dodge pickup with a 6BT Cummins diesel and have great fuel economy, longevity, and enough power to rip a couple of those SRTs in half. :)

I've never really been all that interested in an M715, but that black one has completely changed my mind. Quite aggressive looking:thumbsup:
