View Full Version : NP208 Adjustment

Does anyone know how to adjust the shift linkage on the NP208 T/C to factory specs? The two manuals I have don`t have any adjustment procedures for this t/c, I could only find one for the NP229, which is slightly similiar, but I don`t think that works for the NP208.

The reason for the adjustment is that after the body lift the t/c won`t go past 4HI from the shift lever under the seat and also I want to tighten everything up on the linkage.

I know for some after putting the body lift on, they also added 2 or 3 inches to the linkage. But looking at the linkage I`m not sure how that would work or if it is needed, if anyone has some pictures I would like to see.
Probably this weekend I could take pictures of the linkage and post them for someone to look at.

Thanks,

Chris

I don't know if you need an extention for the shifter or not but you don't need to adj the linkage because of a body lift. Actually I don't think there is any adjustments that can be done to the linkage. You may want to replace the bushing though.
Have you looked under the boot to see if the shifter is hitting the floor pan not allowing it full swing? Odds are you'll need to cut away some of the sheet metal to give the shifter enough room to move.

Joe,

Thanks for the diagram and e-mail.
I will be hopefully working on it tommorow to at least determine the problem. I`ll also take pictures so someone can maybe advise me. But I am also hoping that someone knows or has information on how to adjust the linkage to factory specs. All I have found is the NP229 or Dana 200.

There is no adjustment to the 208 linkage. That is not your problem. What is wrong is that you have raised the body higher than the factory specs. What you need to do now is add to the lenght of the lever that goes straight down and connects to the lever off the case. If you lifted say 3 inches then you may need to extend that lever about 3 inches. Good luck

I don`t think there is lever that goes straight down. The shifter in the cab connects to linkage that goes straight up and then a horizontal piece of linkage come off of that and connects to a vertical flat piece(unless you mean this one). I will shortly make a drawing and post it.

You just adjust it one way or the other if needed. On the diagram I sent you(208 w/AT linkage) look at index numbers 18.700-1, 18.700-2 and 18.700-3. That's where any adj is made. Factory quote: " Loosen the trunnion jambnuts and move the trunnion on the rod to obtain the desired adjustment."
Unless you've completely disassembled the linkage, trunnion, rod etc you shouldn't need to change anything from the way it came. I think your shift probs are prolly more worn bushings in the linkage rather than the rod being out of adjustment. If you have completely taken it apart just set it in the middle and work from there in either direction till it shifts.

Joe,
The main problem is that now the t/c is 3 inches lower and the linkage 18.690-1 is at an angle down instead of perfectly horizontal.

The solution that I will use: is to make 18.695-1 3 inches longer(approx will measure) and will drill new hole to attach 18.690-1 so that it is horizontal.

Thanks for your diagram(it really helped me figure out how the t/c linkage works)and help.
