I'm installing my S10 gas tank in the morning. I'm not using a return line now, so I won't be putting one into the new tank. The pickup/pump/sender assembly has a spout for a vent line. I know I need to vent the tank as the S10 cap isn't vented. So, how do I safely vent this tank without going out and getting the whole charcoal canister thing.

Here's what I did on my race car. It's a 401 powered AMC Spirit. The tank has a vent line welded in the top, but I didn't want to run it to a charcoal cannister. I ran a hose from the tank as high as possible above the rear axle, about 6" higher than the tank vent. At the end of the hose I installed a fuel filter, to keep stuff from getting into the vent line. That's it. I never have vapor problems. If your S10 tank doesn't have a vent, some radiator shops can install one. Just make sure it's at the highest point.
Where are you putting this S10 tank? How many gallons?

thanks Cliff, it's a 22 gal tank, going to hang it where the spare is supposed to be.
13 gallons ! now that would be a complete waste of time ! This is a 22 gallon tank, I've got the filler neck too, and it looks like it is going to go out the body right under the side tank fill.

Tank fits great, filler neck even lines up. Had spare room towards the axle, but between the rails it was a good fit. It comes down even with my hitch on the bottom so I'll probably do a body lift or rear blocks to gain some ground clearance. Well worth the time spent to pick up the extra capacity.

What year S10 is it from and what engine? How did you rig up the sending units? I am looking to do the same but I was going to try to get a 20-gallon plastic tank from a YJ or something with a carbed sending unit and not an FI pump/sending unit.
Got pics?
Thanks

It's from a 96 4.3 liter vortec. I hooked up the sending wires, but not the fuel pump wires. I got a gm fuel gauge for $5 to put under the dash. I'm drawing through the fuel pump and not using it, but I did run wire for the pump so I can pull the hose off of my fuel/water seperator put power to the pump and fill my mower and stuff like that.

Nice! Portable gas station! smile.gif
So you are pulling fuel through the electric pump with the mechanical pump? Does it flow freely?

Cool, thanks. $70 plus $40 shipping is a little more than I want to spend. Thanks for the info though!
I wonder if all electric pumps are like the one in the S10 tank where the fuel can be pulled through with no resistance.
