OK i am clueless with starters,so i'm sorry in advance.
When i tried to start today, all i got was a really fast clicking. so, with they key in the on position, i touched a screwdriver to the post of the solenoid and it would slowly turn about 2 degrees at a time. after doing this for a few minutes the starter made a noise that was like a zinging(like a kids toy or something). then i could start the jeep by using the key, just like normal. so what is the problem? where do i start? any info would be much appreciated

My 88 gw did the same thing.

I found I had a loose conection on the starter.

I would look over the wires. Check and see if they are in good shape, and tight.

But I did eventually need to replace my starter too. They used a Mitsu starter on the later Jeeps.

I hope this helps.
