Is anyone running any kind of engine skid?

I am used to the world of off roading my TJ, and an engine skid was a must. But im starting to wonder if its something i need on the waggy, since i cant seem to find anything about them any where.

Seems unnecessary to me. There's an axle in the way of most all protrusions. I've never hit my oil pan on a rock, much less any other object. Tranny/Tcase have hit rocks, but not the oil pan. Of all the little things on my "maybe one day" list, that isn't even close to being on it.

just fab up something like this to cover the tcase and one for the tranny and you'll be fine

Thats borderline jinx-ology Willie

Nah, I bet I'll break plenty of parts before I ding the oil pan.

Nice skid Brett!

The factory oil pan on my cherokee had a thick steel plate on the bottom side, I noticed on later model 6's it was done away with. It's a pretty beefy little plate and I suppose you could replicate it and afix to a V8 application if it made a person feel better.

I reused that oil pan in 2 motor swaps and didn't think much about it. I did think about my gas tank hanging naked and completely unprotected when I gouged a nice hole in it wheelin. That's a place you need to insure a skid plate of some kind if your looking at some serious wheelin'.

Thanks everyone for the info...so today (for a change) im not loosing my mind!

It looks like the only diff cover is the one offered at Bj's, is this correct? Is anyone running it, if so how is it holding up? Based on the discription of it, it sounds like its the closest thing to being bullet proof.

Hardly! great lakes offroad makes a beast cover for ~$120 for d44's as well as many other vendors. google dana 44 diff covers or even look some up on ebay.

skid plate has held up excelently! quite a bit of rock rash on it too. i think itll really be put to the test once i shorten the frame. I have enough material to make one more if anyone wants one...

Sorry i guess i should have added, for the AMC 20.

For the 44 im leaning towards the solid brand diff cover.

Skid's hold in heat. AMCs are hotter than h*ll. I say no.

i would think the hood holds in the most heat. Needs a set of vents at the back of them.

luvers would look sexy if done right on a FSJ hood.
