I was wondering what some peoples opinions on the Pep Boy tires. I am looking at the Futura 31X10.5 tires that look exactly like BF Goodrich AT's. They are only $260 for four tires, and they have a 50,000 mile waranty on them. They sound good to me, just wanna know what you think.

Thanks

Ted

my exp with larger tires of the lower cost variety like that is that the quality control is not as good.. out of round tires.. ones that have more rubber on one part than another.. makes em hard to balance.. I had some general tires once that took a TON of weight to balance. and they were never quite right..

for the extra $100 I would put on the REAL BFG A/T KO's.......they are noticable better than the old A/T's

I have had good experiences with Pep Boy Tires.

You just can't beat the price on these.

Once I get a new stock rim, I will be mounting their P 265 - 75 - 15 (30.65" X 10.53) Highway tread tire on my '84 GW.

The cost is about $ 250.00 out the door.

I get all my tires from SAM'S CLUB. I don't know if this is available to you in your area but I got 4 33inch BFG Mud TA's mounted and balanced for $404 total! I could only imagine that your size would be alot cheaper. Also got the wife some 31inch Michillens for around the same price(awesome tires). I personally would stick with a better tire that doesn't start shedding tread the first time you hit the rocks on the trail. Those of you who hit the trail know what I'm talking about. Just my 2 cents worth. I might add that I have tried some off brand tires before(Coopers) and had terrible luck with getting replacements. One look at the tires and they told me that the warranty did not cover off-road use http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif. Go figure.

I haven't bought tires from Manny, Moe , and Jack but I did buy some wheels from them about 20 years ago. One of the wheel's welds broke and mangled my from rotor, caliper, etc. and nearly mangled me. Then I got an attitude from the store manager. I would never buy an important part from the Boys again. I have a tire guy who I trust and I'll pay a few extra bucks for the peace of mind of knowing that my tires are sound and mounted properly.

I've been pretty loyal to BF Goodrich since my forst car. But Lately I"ve been using the Pep Boys 31" Mud T/A clones and they work excellent. I used to have BFG A/Ts before but I would get stuck in the mud with them.

Treadted2:

Check out the following link and make your own decision about tires. For my money I am staying with Pep Boy's.

Their gurantee is as good as anybodys and they are nation-wide.

Yeah, I read that and it seemed pretty impressive. I still don't know. I am leaning towards getting them. How are they working for you? How do they handle off-road? Do you have the Dakota's??

I purchased my '84 GW during August of 1999 and my first task was to improve the mechanicals and then the body work.

Whenever I purchase a used car, the first things that I have always done and it has not failed me yet is to replace the tires, brakes, hoses, belts and change all fluids including greasing the frame, wheel bearings and suspension.

To get the GW on the road safe I purchased for the first time Pep Boy Tires. I purchased the Cornell 808 white wall tire at the price of 4 for $ 99.00. They have last me 12,000 w/o any problems on or off road.

However, my off-road is limited to soft dry and wet sand. You need to get the tire for the terrain you will be on. My GW like most 4 X 4's spend more time on road than off.

With the highway tread you can pump the tires up to maximum and get better gas mileage and they perform well on dry and wet sand. On rocks and mud I couldn't tell you.

I am going to purchase four P265 15 75 R Futura Adventurers HT as soon as I get a new rim for the GW.

Thw wider tire will give me the flotation that I need. By the way, I have only been stuck twice with these narrow Coenell Tires (P 235 15 75 R). This was in sand on the beach and I was able to dig myself out with a jack, boards and shovel.

You will have to get comments from the other FSJ Owners on this thread for their experiences with rocks and mud.

Good Luck!
