View Full Version : 42" Iroc's for the Chief... FINALLY Got'em All Mounted....

This new thread is a spin-off this thread... http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=88403
I made a new one since there will be a lot more to come regarding these tires. I will probably have to do some rethinking on my rig to get them to fit.. As it, probably say bye bye to the flares and install TJ flares instead..
Anyway, here is what I have now..
There is a lot of speculation regarding the actual size of the Iroc 42"s. Mine are 24/42x16.5, and they measure a true 40.5" without a wheel, and 41.25" mounted to a whee with 20psi. Once I get them on the Jeep, I will remeasure them at 20psi then drop them to about 10-12psi and measure again.
When I picked them up yesterday, I was a bit dissapointed at how skinny they looked. I HATE the pizza cutter look. However, the REALLY filled out once I got the wheels on and aired them up.
I dont know why people say that these wont do as well in mud as a TSL. The voids are MUCH larger as are the lugs. Not to mention the bad A side lugs/tread. I would think that they would perform better in mud than many other Swampers. I understand that some Irocs have more shallow tread, but on this size, the tread is 24/32" which is deeper than the tread on my TSL/SX's.
Here is a shot compared to a 36/12.5x16.5 TSL/SX's.. The truck has a 4" lift.

These show how much they change shape once you put some air in them.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/dmntxn77/75%20Chief/42%20inch%20Irocs/8.jpg
I probably wont get them on the Chief until Sunday. I might not even be able to mount the rear ones yet since the rear lift is not done. If not, its gonna look REAL funny since my 8 lug rollers have 26" or so rubber wrapped around them... :D

Looking good Robert! IMO, the only tire Interco makes that does better in mud than Iroks is the Bogger. At low tire speeds, the TSL appears to do better in the muck than an Irok, but get those Iroks spinning & they'll sling twice as many chunks.

Yeah, I figure the same. One big help is that the Irocs are dirrectional tires, and the leading edge of the lugs is cupped like a paddle tire. I bet they will really sling the wet stuff. That also explains why some say that they chunk worse than any other swamper.
I was able to get the rear ones mounted tonight. I will probably get the fronts on in the next couple of days.

And, it looks like the 42"s will stuff in the factory wheel wells WAY better than I expected. However, I will have to lose the flares to make them fit. I am fine with that though, because the cut flares look real small and pretty silly with the huge rubber. I will put the TJ flares that I have on it instead.

I lined them up on my 79 a while back. Notice that they are just held up with C clamps so they look sloppy, but the really do line up well.

The rears are a tad short, but I plan to loose the rockers in favor of a boatside/skid/step someday anyway... And, as always, that chuck behind the rear tires, below the last body line will be removed too...

Regearing?
Nope... I already have 4.88's, and with the Klune/np205 combo, I am sure that I will have more than enough gearing to get me by. If I ever feel short on gears, I will get the Low Max set-up for the 205 before I re-gear the axles.
What springs you have under that thing?
The front springs are new, and they might be 2" lift springs, not sure since I dont know how much arch NOS front springs have. The rear just has the factory springs plus a 4" block. I will be swapping to a shackle flip with inboarded 63" GM springs before hit any trails.
And I am anxious to get the TJ flares on too. However, at the moment, they are near the bottom of the list of MUST do's before I can wheel it....

I am getting closer. I have the rebuilt 32 spline 205, the Klune, and all the rear shackle flip brackets (thanks Tad) on hand now. All I have left is to go grab the 63" rear springs, get the th400/klune adapter and tailshaft, and rebuild the tranny, and I will be good to go..

Cool, looking good. I think those tires are about the perfect width, wide tires just seem to look excessive, while skinny tires just don't fit right with most rigs. For the flares though, have you thought about the Bushwhacker Pocket flares? For all the money and effort you've put into this thing, the TJ flares just look kinda cheap, they don't fit well with the FSJ IMO, the little reflector on the front flares just looks weird on an FSJ. The Bushwhacker XJ Pocket flares are bigger, and have a look that really matches a lifted FSJ. They'd certainly look more like they belonged than the TJ flares would. Just a thought anyway. If I had the time and money my Chero would be rolling on the same tires, but I'd do the M715 flares with the rear fenderwells tubbed, kinda like 'Hammer's Chero.
Dmntxn77
07-03-2008, 09:59 AM
Nope, no Bushwackers for me.. Those cost WAY too much money to just get torn off.. I can pic up an extra TJ flare here an there for next to nothing when one gets damaged...
Plus, I dont really agree anyway. I think that the square TJ flares match the FSJ body lines real well.

Good point about the cost of the Bushwhacker flares, if you'll be scraping against stuff you'll be crushing a lot of $$. What about rear TJ flares all around? The front TJ flares just look weird on an FSJ, to me anyway. If you like the look it's your truck of course. I'm just saying, to me the front TJ flares just look terribly unatural, especially because they're so readily recognizable as having come off a TJ. And at the point you've gotten to already with this thing, I'd be racing along to finish it up and get on the trails with it. And should your engine die or anything, you won't be lighting it on fire, for you've got an excuse for a 401 swap of course.
Dmntxn77
07-03-2008, 12:48 PM
Yeah, who knows what I will do... I agree the front edge of the front flare looks a bit odd. But the rear flare is not shaped right for the front. Also, keep in mind, that these pics are on my 79, where as my 75 has the big bumper on the front, which I am sure will help tie into the shape of the flares.
Eitherway though, like I said, I dont mind the look. Plus, this is a wheeler, not a beauty queen. I want flares because I think wide tires look silly without them, I need them to be street legal, and unlike many members here, I DO like mud but I dont want to eat it from the front tires if I dont have to...
Regarding lighting it on fire, you are probably right.. And, thanks for reminding me about the 401. I wonder if my guy is ready to come down below $300 by now.. :D

Nope, not really... I got the fronts mounted to the wheels, but then I swapped to 12 bolt H1 wheels, so I have to remount them all over again..
Did you have some rims re-centered. Why the change to 12-bolts? Radial
tires?
Pics Please!!!
p.s. Thanks for the info on the H1's
I'm going to have Dean from Performance Cryogenics re-center a set of 12-bolt civillian rims for me I'll post pics when he's done.

Did you have some rims re-centered.
No, I am running DRW axles, so I dont need to have my wheels recentered. I bought like that on purpose because:
1) The DRW axles usually cost less
2) Stock H1 Rims fit (no expense of recentering)
3) The front hubs are protected by the wheel
Why the change to 12-bolts?
I figure that 50% more bolts means 50% more grab on the tire. And the price was too good to pass up...
Radial tires?
Nope, never again on a wheeler... Bias is the way to go!!

Thanks Al, but I am on hold for parts more than anything. I still need to get the Klune adapter and have my tranny rebuilt with the new tailshaft..
I dont want to start the rear suspension until I know exactly where the rear output will be on my 205.
However, once I finally decide to cough up those checks, maybe I will bring it down your way (since you have a shop) for the weekend or something. That way, we could make some headway on both of our rigs...

What about custom tube fender flairs?? The bends would be easy enough to do with an old trailer wheel, a cheater bar and a saw-zall. Add a little sheet metal and whalla... no more mud lunches!
Those tires look great. It's kind of a shame to need to cover them in the first place.

Looks great.
I'm folowing a very similar approach and was not sure how well the 42's would fit and stuff.
I'm going with a linked suspension, and to be honest, I wouldn't mind mine sitting a couple of inches lower than that, but at least I know that it won't need as much lift as I was thinking.
I'm guessing that is a DRW 60 up front. Mine is as well, with the same rims.
I had sort of pictured it in my mind, and thought it would come out all-right. Good to know that I wasn't completely out in left field with my expectations.
Hope the rest of it works as well for you. Post up about the Klune performance. I'm going with either a 203/205 doubler setup, which I already have, or a 203/271. I'm trying to decide which would suit me better, the twin stick capability of the 205, or the deeper gearing of the 271. Given my engine, I think the gearing could be more handy, as it would allow me to run a little taller gears in the axles. Hard to design a really versitile drivetrain around a 4BT, without an OD Transmission.
Maybe it's time to start looking for an 4L80.
In any case, thanks for the thread, and the pics. It proves that I'm not quite as far out in left field as I had feared.

Yep, they fit just fine... Mine is SOA with fresh front springs and a 2" body lift. So, I figure somewhere between 8-10" of lift. Personally, I wouldnt want any less. No more either though....

Yeah is a DRW 60... Paired with the H1 wheels it gives the rig a very nice stance! Not to wide...

I will post plenty about the Klune once I finally get to start beating on it... I think that it is going to work out real good for me...
Have you measured a 271? IIRC its 6"s or so wider than a 205. I would put money that it wont fit inbetween the frame rails on a FSJ. Also, isnt it a cast aluminum case? If so, thats two big thumbs down for off road use. Its a tough case, and if I were building a big sled puller, it would probably be my first choice, but I wouldnt want it on a trail rig...
I would stick with the 203/205 combo if I were you. That combo is proven bullet proof, has strong aftermarket support, and (like you said) you will be able to twin stick the 205. If you decide that you need more gear options later, just throw the LowMax kit into the 205.
I assume that want to drive this to the trail. What rpm range do you hope to get at highway speeds? What gears do your 1 tons have in them now?

Well, there is plenty of room with the tires at full lock. However, my power steering pump was not too happy with the big meats. I literally boiled the P/S fluid trying to turn the tires. I finally had to take some weight off of them to get them turned all the way. Anyway, here are the pics...

Well, I am definately impressed. I would have swore the tires would get into the springs with those tires. Unfortunately, mine will for certain, as my D60 is an 89, and my spring perches are wider than yours. I think, given what I'm seeing from your photos, that I wouldn't lose as much radius as I had feared, but there is no doubt they would rub.
That's why I decided to link mine, more than anything else. Still hedging between a 3 link with panhard, or 4 link triangulated. I'm seriously considering stretching the wheelbase in the front about 4 inches, so that I can go just a little bit lower than you, and also to move a bit more weight to the rear axle. I'll post up a pic of the concept I have in mind, but no laughing.
Still have to work out the details for a fender up front. Thinking along the lines of some type of tube fender, similar to an aftermarket wrangler fender. Will have to narrow the radiator suppost, and figure out a way to tie it all together that doesn't look all hacked up. The fenders will tie into the rock rails under the door, and possibly to similarly built fenders in the rear. Back half will ultimately be tubed, with J-10 sheet metal hung on it, so I can go as crazy as I like back there.
All in all, I am very glad you posted this, because my gut response was that 39.5's might be the tallest reasonable fit.

I was going to mention that. You're going to have some serious issues if you don't go hydro assist. Rag joints are like butter and steering boxes will crap out. I wouldn't wheel it hard until you get that fixed.

I was going to mention that. You're going to have some serious issues if you don't go hydro assist. Rag joints are like butter and steering boxes will crap out. I wouldn't wheel it hard until you get that fixed.
Yeah, it was an expected problem... I just didnt know that my pump was already shot. Well, maybe its the pump, it could be the box. I havent had time to trouble shoot it yet.

I will switch to something like this. http://bjsoffroad.com/cartgenie/prodInfo.asp?pid=466&cid=13
However, I will probably just build one myself. There are several options of U joints to be found on ebay and tractor supply stores.

i used a flaming river joint and have never had an issue. I didn't have to take the steering column apart either. Just cut, slide on, and bolt down. simple and 1/3 the price.

can't really imagine a tire being that tall and still be stable with the weights our rigs are pushing.

I couldnt be paid enough to run pizza cutters like that..

Nah, it will be plenty stable. Our rigs really are not that heavy. Plus, I have a relatively short lift, wide stance, and A LOT of unsprung weight to keep me right side up... Once I chop it, the COG will be even lower...

Just out of curiosity, what is the measurement from the bottom of the front bumper to the ground? PA and their silly bumper height laws...

I dont know... I will measure for ya.
I havent really worried about because in TX as long as my headlights are not over 52"s to the center, I am good..
However, in PA, it looks like your rule is max bumper height of 27" front and 29" rear for a vehicle with this GVWR... So, I dunno, mine would probably be over since I am at almost 21"s just to axle centerline....

Doh, better check my '65...
Edit, right at 54"s to the center of the light so I guess I'm still legal.

When he gets through with it he will be burnt out on it and sell it, maybe he will have it in Texas by then.:D

I was reading the PA state law, and it looks like the bumper height based on GVWR was never implemented. Best I can tell, 30" is the magic number. The 35's I have now serve their purpose, but I have a set of 39's sitting out back, and your Cherokee is just putting bad thoughts in my head :D

Robert, I can't find/remember if you have done this yet. Have you flexed it with the 42s on there yet? I saw the turning lock to lock, but don't remember and couldn't find anything about flex.

...my power steering pump was not too happy with the big meats. I literally boiled the P/S fluid trying to turn the tires. I finally had to take some weight off of them to get them turned all the way...
Welcome to the club!

It sits 31"s from bottom center of the front bumper to the ground.

So far, I guess Im just gonna talk about it..
I should have had it done by now, but I have spent the last couple grand of my play money on my other toy Jeep....
When he gets through with it he will be burnt out on it and sell it, maybe he will have it in Texas by then.:D
Nah, I have just been talking crap... I cant imagine ever getting so burned out on this project that I have to part it out..
However, it has been a nice break focusing on the niner instead...

Nope, I havent flexed out yet... I probably wont do it for a while either....
BUT.... As Will has pointed out, I will (as always) post plenty pics when I do.
