I checked the forum and got some good info on how to replace the FSU but it looks like the PO replaced b4 as the lid is not secured down and when I take it off there is a towel and a plastic bag(like you get at wal-mart) stuffed in there  what is the best way to secure this, I do need to change out the unit as per my guage says full all time but whats the best way to seal? Thanks

You mean stuffed into the fuel tank? I can't remember if the new unit completely covers the hole in the top of the tank or not. Take your new part and compare it to the opening in the tank.

No it actually is stuffed between the opening and the tank, not inside the tank. I think they stuffed it in there because they did not know what to use to keep the cover shut

I think he means the hatch was not secured and the P.O. put a rag on top of the sending unit to block the fumes from coming into the cabin.
If the holes are stripped try and get a little larger screw. Get some silicone and go to town around the perimeter then screw the cover down tight and let it dry before folding the carpet back.

They are riveted from the factory but if someone has been into beofre they probably used screws

I saw like a screw hole, not happy per alot of rust forming around it and the hole opening, another thing that will need some por-15, mark that on my list of things to do.....does the list ever end....not for me :(

Thanks87GasWag, before you went ahead and changed out the gas tank sending unit, first check to make sure problem is just a corroded contacts at the electrical connection? This is what happened on mine. Oxidiation built up at electrical contacts, creating increased in resistance, hence gauge shows full all the time. With your tank near empty, you can measure the resistance between sending unit and ground, and should show very little resistance, I'll say 0 to 5 ohms at most. If it doesn't you gauge is probably right, the sending unit may be toast.

Okay. What if your guage shows full most of the time, but at some point it drops to "E" -- except when you accelerate it moves up to the appropriate level. What does it mean?

The older style sending units will fluctuate the dash guage when the gas moves suddenly back & forth in the tank. the newer style replacement units don't. If the guage reads full with a full tank but stays there after a few days of driving then drops down towards "E", the sending unit is on it's way out.
