Painting advice and tips. please

First time painter[non rattle can] I have a 24 ft enclosed trailer all steel has some external rust and paint flakes, no real damage. so what are my first steps? I want to paint it to match my truck, I know that checker has some new duplicolor paint items, I'm gonna rubber coat the roof, so only sides and front and back. Also, should I sandblast the old paint or just sand it down alittle and down to metal where is has aquired some rust?

so nobody paints here? NO/MO,BUT, I'VE PAINTED THOUSANDS OF CARS/TRUCKS.RULE OF THUMB,IF IT'S BEEN PAINTED MORE THAN ONCE, STRIP IT!! IF RUST IS PITTED, SAND BLAST THE RUST! SEAL IT "EPOXY", THEN PAINT IT, WITH A/E WITH OR WITH OUT HARDNER! EASY! :rolleyes: :D
