View Full Version : Newbie with a lift question

Hey guys, I am completely new to the FSJ world and am realizing what the bug is all about. Anyways, I have a '73 Wagon and am going to get the BJ's 4" lift for it. The only question I have is BJ's said it was a complete bolt-on without having to lengthen or extend anything. I've installed my share of lifts and have always had to lenthen this or extend that line or reindex. So if anyone has done this lift for the 63-73 Wagons can someone tell me if the lift is really as easy as they make it sound. Thanks in advance.

The only thing I had to lengthen with the BJ's 4" lift was the brake lines. And that wasn't even a real necessity, more I just wanted to ditch the 30 yr old lines and not stress them out and risk rupture on the trail. Some just relocate the brackets for the brake lines and move them down. But other than that, yup, it's a direct bolt in with little to no mods required.

Does it come with a dropped Pitman arm???

I have a Skyjacker 4" lift and even with a DPA, I have some bump steer. I have the track bar disconnected, however. I think with the track bar connected, it would be minimized.

I know some folks swear that sometimes you don't need the DPA, but I did.

i also went with BJ's extended brake lines. One of those mightaswell things. :D

DPA is not necessary, and no I don't think it comes with the 4" lift kit (maybe included in the 6" kit). I didn't run one with mine, and didn't have any problems. No track bars or sway bars or whatever you want to call them.

Thanks I appreciate it. I was worried about a DPA, and if the driveshafts would have to be lengthened any. I figured I would lengthen the brake lines just because mine has been sitting for 10 years and it's time for a resurrection.

Oh yeah, you said in the first post "little to no modifications" do you remember what "little modifications" there may have been. The only reason I ask is because with 12 hour shifts during the week and finally getting to see the family on the weekends every minute or small mod counts.

I had to lengthen the front drive shaft, but that was all for the 4 inch lift on a j10, 80 model

I did eventually lengthen the front brake lines on my 75 cherokee. For the back I just dropped the mounting spot. Drive shafts were fine, although when I damaged the rear shaft, I had the new one made a tiny bit longer.

As for a DPA, I ran the 4" lift on it for 4 years as a daily driver with no DPA. Never had bump steer issues. When I went to the 6", then I had massive bump steer, and the DPA was a requirement just to drive down my driveway.

No special mods besides the brake lines come to mind (and you may have to hunt for front lines, I know I did. I think your D30 uses CJ5 lines). The back is the largest pain though. Your bushings are going to be froze onto the post. I ended up using pullers to pull it off the front and rear post at the same time. When putting on the new springs, apply oil to the post, and the inside of the bushings. Will make it a lot easier. Oh, and start soaking all the bolts about a week before hand with good penetrating oil.
