First off I would just like to howdy to everyone here. Secondly, I bought a 73 Wagoneer(my only one to this point) 2 years ago after it sat for 10. I got it running in an afternoon 2 years ago just to see if it would still run. Then it sat at my house for 2 years because I didn't have any money. Finally, this past weekend I got back out to her (and funds are flowing now, I'm a college student) and got her running again from a 5 gallon gas can to see what was leaking or needed to be fixed. So now that you have the back story, I need some help. It has a 76 360 in it with QT and I'm assuming a TH400 (correct me if I'm wrong).

-The gas tank is going to get pulled and steam cleaned... any tips or advice on pulling the tank out the easiest way possible (it looks pretty easy but my judgement has been off before).

-It needs exhaust gaskets...how difficult is it to pull the headers and replace the gaskets? Anyone know a price guesstimate?

-The crossover pipe has a baaaaaaaaaad leak/hole in it, anyone know if a mom and pop exhaust shop can fix this...and for how much. I've been told no less than $300

-It has the QT and an auto...so I'm assuming it's the TH400 right? Anyways these seals and gaskets need to be replaced...is this a hard job?
How much to have it done?

With that said, I know I should call around to local shops and get quotes, but I've always had another brand vehicle in my driveway and have no clue what FSJ parts/repair bills would look like. I could do almost all this work myself, but with limited time on my hands now it's just easier to drop it off and pick it up when it's done.

To list what has been done in the 2 years I've had it...I rebuilt the top end, new fluids and other basic stuff just to keep gunk out and keep her lubed.

Another tidbit about this Wagon...the body is straight as an arrow, with no filler, chrome still shines bright, and the interior is cherry. It was my girlfriend's dad since new and I picked it up off him for $200.

If anyone has anyother suggestions on repairs, problem areas, performance upgrades, good places for parts let me know.

Thanks in advance for any and all help guys.

Oh yeah guys, a couple more things...This is going to be a future wheeler with better axles, engines, so on and so forth...so if someone could shed some light on what bolts up to what for future swaps that would be great. Ie engine/trans combos (like would a 401 be a direct bolt in for my 360?), axles from what years or companies (like would a Ford D44/D60 be an easy enough swap in). Summer plans are calling for a custom SOA and shackle flip since apparently anything pre-74 isn't "popular" for some reason. Anyone have any advice, insight, or done an SOA and shackle flip on a 73? What is so much different from the other years? Thanks again for any help and sorry for my ignorance.

Welcome to the madness. If you have the original Quadratrac under your Wag, then a TH400 is in front of it.

I take it by your screen name that you're a Vol fan? Are you located anywhere close to the TN line?

EDIT: If you are able to make it to Uwharrie this weekend, even without an FSJ - you'll be able to pick a few of our brains. We're having the annual East Coast Invasion there - you're welcome to come! :D

I actually play football for the Vols. I am home in Salisbury doing an internship so I can graduate and have been to Uwharrie many a time with non-Jeep vehicles. For guys who want pics...lemme see if I can find them, I'm at work right now with a company laptop...let's see if I can get them migrated.

Well then, you've gotta come to the ECI - the rest of 'em might not see it like me, but in my book - as a Vol player you'd be a VIP.

These are the only 2 pics I can access right now...the body has a little surface rust but it'll get painted in a few weeks. I hope I can post them right in here. If you get red x's here's the links...

Well thanks for the hospitality...where in Uwharrie do you guys meet up...camping areas, trail heads, etc. I'm hoping to get the gas tank cleaned this week and then she'll at least be driveable with a few quarts of assorted fluids by my side and a max of 20 mile trips so I don't get exposed to too much carbon monoxide.

IIRC, we'll be at Baden Lake group camp, just look for the FSJs ;) Its actually my first trip to Uwharrie - I usually hit the local USFS trails around here, plus Harlan KY, Royal Blue, and Windrock.

Btw, I'll have some extra fluids - these things always need 'em. :D

Can someone tell me what the difference is between 73 and 74 Wagoneers, and why it seems like pre-74 there is no aftermarket for?

One thing, IIRC, is that they went from post mount springs to the shackle type. But someone will explain. Dont be afraid of the archives, there's GREAT info there...

welcome from NH.

You should be able to get a cross over pipe for a lot cheaper than $300 and be able to install it yourself when you pull the manifolds off to replace the exhaust gaskets. its a good day worth of work.

If you guys don't mind...I'm gonna kinda morph this into a project thread...unless this is the wrong place to post it (just lemme know). Last night pulled the driveshafts still look absolutely awesome, so for now gonna keep them.

Woulda never pulled the driveshafts but realized the rear was blocking the two phillips screws in the bracket holding up the gas tank. So I figured pull the shafts and check them out.

Anyways, called the local radiator shop to clean my original gas tank. They quoted me $2-300 and before I brought it in I would have to do rust/corrosion prep work. Then they told me they would need at least $150 up front and it would take 3 weeks. So I said screw it and am going with the BJ's tank for $150. Anyone had experience with these tanks? Are they as easy going in as it was coming out?

Tonight there will be inspection of the hubs and front/rear axles. Any tips, advice, upgrades anyone would recommend?

Thanks for your time.

Found a place that I could get the crossover and they would do the gaskets and labor all for $350. I was happy, cuz I really didn't want to have to do it.

I'm sure it's waaaaaaaaaaaay outta my price range. Besides I just finished 2 $20,000 restores/buildups on my other 2 babies. I'd post pics but they're blue ovals and I'm not sure how well non-jeep pics are tolerated on this site.

Well seeing as I'm gonna drop about 3-4 grand to get mine drivin well and lifted...so if you'd sell it for less than 4 g's I'd stop the build on my wagon and buy yours.
