Dude, my favorite truck :) Looks like some nice work you've done so far.

I was looking at that engine at first going, " hmm, that does not look like an amc 360, what is it? A big block chevy?" , and then I saw what you wrote at the end ;)

Good luck with that truck, Those are just awesome!

thanks guys.

progress is kind of at a stand still as of right now i will find out soon if the NV4500 i found is in the budget and then i can get on to making a t-case x-member. my functional short block is on its way from iowa as of the 4th of july, so that another step in the right direction.

Well nice to e-meet ya! We'll have to hook up sometime and kill a few pabsts and talk jeep. I have the Viper Blue/Black 79 Cherokee that you may have seen rolling round here. Also have a few others and they get worked on every day. Current mad project is a frame up on a 68 J3000, working on suspension in the back yard at the moment. You ever need some help luggin or cuttin I'll trade ya for some of that welding you do :D If you're ever looking for FSJ parts I know where most of the local ones are, and of course I have a giant pile of stuff.

Yeah that M715 at Basin. I scoped it out on a sunday about a year ago and decided I wouldnt bother asking about it, it was too nice. were those pics of yours taken at Lon's bayfield yard?

I know Avalanche  I did a few weeks at Fab Fours when they opened up..to be honest glad they left town. Their rockcrawler was cool though.

I haven't been to Lons but once since his Durango yard closed. I usually haunt Hansteds down the road from me, but they've been crushing the FSJs they have..there's a few good ones left though. Yah man drop me line sometime when it's slow, I'd be happy to pop over.

some more progress. it has been going slow. helping a buddy with his project, and trying to chase down parts/money. hopefully i can find a transmission soon, as i think i changed my mind to go back to a divorced t-case, so i need to find a 2wd nv4500. anyhow, i gusseted the engine stands, and painted it all up. i also may have decided to go with a small block at least in the initial build. there is indications of that in the pictures

i can say the humidity of iowa was worse. the dry heat isn't so bad but straining and fighting without my normal array of power tools was definately tough. the M715 has been staring at me from out in the yard at work for a few weeks now as other projects crept in front of it. now it can rgain its spot at the top of the list and i can get to building a crossmember for it

ditched the bushing tube idea in favor of something that will add better rigidity to the frame
new attachment plan includes sleeving the frame and fishplating over the new holes(all of the holes were drilled, not torched)

tube copes into them as such

the tube runs down the frame for a little less than 3 feet. also follows the contour of the frame

Really nice looking work. Nice welds and fabrication.
Hopefully I'll have a shop or something to work in soon. Wish where I used to work didn't shut down(Sheetmetal fab shop),all the tools and material I needed, but didn't get to finish my project then. Still not finished.
Wish I would've bought the 715 I looked at here. was cheaper than the cherokee, but a lot rougher too.
There are a few of them still floating around here.

since a lomax is expensive, and i get bored easily, i came up with something to do in the mean time.
Power Steering.
swapped in this sweety yesterday
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715130.jpg
found the box in a bucket of scrap. no clue where it came from, but it fits great
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715131.jpg
the stock steering shaft would not fit due to length/spline count issues. this was the solution
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715132.jpg
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715134.jpg

today i just finalized the shaft, welded it to the column and welded the u-joint yokes to the new intermediate shaft.

now i need to find a FSJ power steering pitman arm.

I went to the local scrap yard today and paid dearly for a grand wagoneer pitman arm to get the truck so it could steer itself around the yard again.
on the way home i stopped by a local self employed mechanic fellow who is a friend of the shop. He also happens to be a junk collector. he has a '94 chevy 3500 cab and chassis with a 454/nv4500 in it that i was interested in as a donor for the M715. anyway, his price was fair, but more than i have. just in conversation i told him that i was looking for a hydroboost set up. we poke around in his piles of stuff and found a late 80's chevy hydroboost/master set up. he said i'm sure ill need some welding done sometime so you can just have it.
i was happy. as of this afternoon the truck can steer itself again(pitman needs reamed, but thats no biggie) and i have a hydroboost to install

You might want to reconsider using that GM truck hydroboost since the pushrod is so long... at least if you are fixin' to cut and weld the rod rather than thread it for an adjustable end. There are two seals you can't replace inside the HB that won't take the heat that well if you weld it. There are some other good/very good options for swapping HB's into the M715 I can run by you if interested and you can prolly find what you need in the yards there also.

ryanroo
08-29-2008, 12:36 AM
i am surely open for suggestion. i will most likely use this one with a mixture of methods to get the pushrod to a usable length
Ryan

Elliott
08-29-2008, 10:49 AM
You can just cut and 3/8 fine thread it for a replacable end that MP - Master Power Brakes sells. I don't really like that option as I think the diameter of the rod is just under 3/8 and the threads are a lil thin... but it does work and would likely hold up just fine.
The better option in my opinion is to use an HB from a step van and replace the mounting plate with one from an Astro van, it has a shorter rod and requires minimal spacing between the mounting plate and your firewall block (you will want to find a '74+ full size Jeep aluminum booster/firewall block, and this bolts right up with perfect pedal spacing on the M715). The two horizontally located studs on the FSJ firewall block will locate in your OEM MC holes and then you just plot/drill the two veritically located stud holes for the block. The 9/16" hole in the pushrod can be drilled up to the 5/8" of your M715 pedal pin. There are a few years of these that have removable pushrods which makes it nice if you want to swap between vehicles as you can buy different rods.
This here is a good buy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TRUCK-HYDROBOOST-MASTER-CYLINDER_W0QQitemZ120285682334QQihZ002QQcategoryZ3 3566QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksid Zp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

I appreciate the info, but since this one is free, i will just space it out and build off of the brake pedal a little to accomodate the chevy version. the hydroboost was free, and i do all my own fab work, so it will end up being cheaper for me this way. i am still saving for a lomax, so i have to be stingy.

I refuse to even consider Lons as a source for anything. He is a thief. Shoot dude I think they are cheaper to buy new than that from BJ's. Drop me a pm if you're ever looking for little stupid stuff like that. There's still a few FSJs left at Hansteds in Oxford, they are interesting to deal with but not ripoffs if you can barter.

I liked it when the big old dude lived and ran the Gem Village area yard. He was cool to deal with but after Lon got booted from Durango and moved up there..well yeah. Over at Hansteds they loooove beer and will even crank up the huge loader to move cars if you're getting something pricey. Well thats our local dirt on the yards that I've learned over the past couple years. Sometimes Basin is worth checking out but they quote computer prices on parts which are like 2/3rds the cost of a new part..they've been ok on old stuff though.

Following your project with utter glee. You must know of the guy from the glass place across the way from you, Tom I think? with the J2000 painted camo..last I talked to him this spring he was putting that body on a dodge diesel truck frame..

ryanroo
09-01-2008, 11:18 AM
im not sure i know of the j2000 camo truck, but its possible. i talk to alot of people at work, so its hard to remember whos got what. i have heard that it was a different story before lon moved over to bayfield. it kind of depends on who you talk to at lons also. i have found that 30 PBRs help out a little. i definately need to go check out hansteds.

i have not been real impressed with basin. there is some cranky old nag that answers the phone and is the person that greets you at the door. she is excellent at driving away customers. i called there on a few different things and if i have to call back for any reason i will not speak with her.

the project is going slow for now. have to pay bills, and that is cutting into the fun money. hopefully firewood sales will alleviate that problem but will also eat into the free time i have to work on it.

Got the mount fabbed up for the hydroboost today. nothing real special just a couple of plates with some tubing spacing them apart. also cut and welded the rod. put a wet shoprag over the rod to keep it cool. fits nice, and seems like it will work.

now to pick elliots brain. Do you know what the plunger travel on the hydroboost is, or what it should be to allow full braking? i am pretty sure i will be ok, but i would rather mod the mount now rather than the day i get it running and find out my brakes are non-op
thanks

the dodge case that happily donated its 32 spline front output to the cause. now my case is 32 spline input/output/output. probably not neccesary, but it was free so why not. also snagged a 1410 rear yoke off the dodge case

i did a little massaging to the shift rails in hopes of having nice easy shifting.
i have some friends coming out from iowa for the weekend of my birthday so i got a free ride for my 454 shortblock. now i have to buy heads/cam/intake/etc. that will take a while to collect. hopefully the new plugs i ordered for the other M715 i am trying to get running will fix the problem(the old ones looked like dog poo). so i can get paid for that and put it towards engine parts
my AA spacer for the t-case should also arrive on monday so i can bolt it all in and cross my fingers that the underbelly structure clears the case with it further back than it was mocked up for

well i haven't updated this lately since not much has been going on. but i have a few new pictures and some new parts in the shop to show.

my birthday was the end of september and a couple of buddies came out to visit from iowa, and brought me one of the big blocks i had there. a nice 30k core, fresh 454 shortblock that has speed pro 9:1s and just needs finished.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715147.jpg

got the t-case finished up and installed then redid the tubes since they looked funny from when i had set up to do a lomax.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715152.jpg

new tubes

tranny mount
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715153.jpg

now for the good stuff. i scored this '86 K30 the other day. comes with a running 454 4 speed and another round pattern 205. add to that the front 60 and 14 bolt rear, and the fact that i drove it on the trailer and for 1300 buck i don't thing you can go wrong.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715158.jpg

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/ryanroo/m715/m715163.jpg

so now its dissasemble the chevy, make new sprng mounts for the kaiser, and sell the 454 shortblock. anyone want a 454 shortblock? :)

I would avoid that "tack-tack-tack" technique as much as possible. They tend to compromise penetration quite a bit.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Mikel, those are continuos welds not a stacked tack method. before i was an offroad fabricator, i was a professional welder. i can assure you that penetration is not an issue.

i am not the biggest fan of the asthetic, but my employer likes it, and i don't hate it. since its his shop and he pays my salary i just make em look like he says to

i plan on taking it to Moab, and the local SW CO stuff. the passes, engineer, stony, ophir etc. its duties will be mostly daily driving and firewood hauling/collection mixed with wheeling and high country camping excursions as well. its going to have to be an all around use vehicle otherwise i couldn't justify the money spent. maybe later in life i will be able to afford strictly toys but for now i can't.

routed the wires using the stock underbody tabs

the wiring harness is still a work in progress. so hopefully it will get done sooner rather than later

made a fan shroud

the shroud is not installed yet either. i have inlaws in town for a week, and i am sure that will slow me down.

i also had to change jobs and that has left me with less time, but fortunately a little more money to spend, so progress is going slower than previously. i am also a little behind where i figured to be at this point since i quit buying parts for a month and a half at the begining of the year. avalanche closed and i got layed off, i knew it was likely going to happen, so i had kind of quit spending any extra money. luckily i found a good job very quickly.

sorry i forgot to update this thing for so long

Nice to see professionals at work. I myself am a club and stump man. Wallowing out in the back yard in dirt without power tools. I manage to keep em running.:fsj:

So ready for Ouray?

its almost ready. i finally ordered a front driveline for it. that should be in monday.

i also converted it to TBI and that was a long winded ordeal. but its done.

i should be ready for an ouray run for sure. provided i can keep myself from taking it apart again to redo something or modify something :)

Thank you.

i havent been updating any of my threads for a while. the camera data cord vanished, so i have no pics. not to mention nothing really fun happened, mostly me fighting with the TBI swap for a long long time. i promise there will be more interesting stuff in the future.
