I need to get my exhaust done so I can go get it smogged. My problem is that like many Wags, my rear quarter panels are rusted through.

I was thinking I'd end up cutting the rusty part off and welding a piece of metal to level with the bed in the back to seal the gap. IF I have a single pipe come out where it did stock, later if I trimmed then my exhaust would be way lower than the body. Is it easy for a exhaust shop to dend pipe after its already in there? Seems like they would have to do it all over agian.

My idea was to have the exhaust come out the side before the rear tire. Has anyone done this before? That way I have to mess with exhaust only once.

You PM'd me, so I know you've seen that I've been going through the same ordeal.

Currently mine runs as you're talking about (and there are other threads where this has been gone through). Most people that have this style have the cherokees where the rear window doesn't open.

I've only driven mine a little bit since the exhaust was put in. With the rear windows down at a stop there is a bit more of an exhaust smell than if it would exit the rear.... but minor. The wife smells it and tells me about it. I don't smell it. That kind of minor.

I actually have plans to try to extend mine to the trimmed up rear quarters by staying outside the frame but inboard of the rear tires. Should just be enough room. That project realistically won't happen for 6 months to a year the way things are proceeding (lots of other things to tie up first).

Biggest constraint of running outside the framerail is ideally you want a muffler that is shaped like a glasspack, long and round. This cuts out some of the cheap easily available mufflers like the turbos.

The mufflers are called something like Hush powers or something? I'd have to check if you're interested.
