You need the dash in it to direct the rising hot air...
I took some 3" dryer vent hose and cut it length-wise and wraped it with metal tape. I also had the luxury of having spare parts to shape the ends and wrap them on a bench.

Quit whinin, an just scrape the inside of the windshield, like everybody else:D

hmm does the deteriorated air duct have anything to do with it. Seriously thou mine doesn't work either but the duct seems to be intact but i haven't followed it all the way. also how the heck do you get the top of the dash off i couldn't figure that one out due to diminished brain capacity:o

after you take all the bolts out by the windshield there are 2 bolts, one on each side panel by the doors, and then one above the steering column that has to be removed and then it all comes off. i am starting on my custom dash and trashing everything else. i was just making a joke since my floorpans werent that bad. who would have thought that 30 years could do that kind of damage. and watch out for the spiders.

Two words: SCAT Tubing. The defroster ducts on my J4000 were in the same shape as yours and I replaced them with this:

I was able to get what I needed at the airport I used to work at; looks like expensive stuff if you order it online.
