Hello,
Where in the world can I find a shift kit for my '88 727? If there isn't one, what can I do to upgrade the tranny in some way or another? What other mod's can one do to this tranny? Thanks for your replys.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I didn't find a resolution to the problem in my search. Also, I do not know enough to understand what most of you say when you get really technical, its as though I were trying t read chinese!

I see nothing for an '88, or for newer than a '79 which was the issue before. I am just wondering if anyone has been able to find something specifically for the newer Wags in shift kits. Thanks again

Summits catalog says B&M make a kit for Chrysler trannys, also Transgo has a kit. Give Summits tech line a call, They are awesome.......phil

The 727 kits out there will not work with your 88 - different type of torque converter. I have had a few 727's modified without a kit - found a good tranny mechanic who could adjust the shift points, and generally tune up the transmission (bands, etc). Maybe not as crisp as a B&M kit, but an improvement. Also, switch to synthetic fluid. Tranny runs cooler and shifts better.

Wow Learn something new everyday, I looked through all my Catalogs and found nothing for anything newer than 79. I guess we know why now! smile.gif

Went through this too. I DID use the B&M Shift Improver kit for the '79 tranny (in my '87 GW). The 727's (all that I've seen and torn apart so far) that were used in Jeeps were NON-LOCKUP ('79 config).

Kit went in great and shifts are very positive and WILL stay in gear until manually shifted unless in drive. In other words, even though they say this kit won't do it, you can stay in 1st gear (or second) till you blow your motor, it won't upshift unless it's in drive or you manually shift from 1st to 2nd (invaluable for towing).

I kept the box from the kit, I'll try to find and give you the B&M P/N

I installed the Transgo kit years ago. I don't recommend doing this if you are an impatient tool throwing individual. It took me a while to make the band and kickdown adjustments correct after installing the kit - Lil' rch's look like logs compared to the adjustments necessary to find the sweet spot. The kit helped the shifts big time.

When I just rebuilt the tranny I found that there is a valve body w/ the kit already installed. You can get one of these through any of the performance tranny shops and maybe Summit. I found a "Stage 1" valve body for $150. Get one of these if you feel that taking apart a valve body and remembering where all of the dozens of parts go and how they go there might be too tough.

Further, I just switched to Mobil synthetic ATF. It makes a very noticeable difference in shift quality AND a huge difference in temperature.

Also, the only difference between a dodge 727 torque converter and yours is that yours has the starter drive on the flexplate the dodge one has it on the torque converter. A 727 is a 727.

I also tried the B&M product and will never buy another one. I had to special order the kit from B&M. I talked to one of their so called techs and he assured me the kit would work fine.........WRONG!!!! I finally had to send it back because they sent the wrong one and the right one wasn't available yet. This of course after I had my tranny apart in the carport. I even had to pay the shipping to get my purchase price back. B&M?.....NEVER, NEVER, NEVER. Go with a trans-go kit.

Far out!, I understand that. What a Bu##er!!!

What about a shifter for an older TF727? It appears that an older TF wont have this problem, example older than 1988? as discussed.

Transgo have some cool info as well, instuctions and the like.

What do you recomend shifter wise for older ones?

Thanks guys.

I will call summit and see what they have to say, otherwise I'll just go with the synthetic oil in my tranny for now. My dream is to convert it to manual, with a tranny from a j-truck, but i see that in the very distant future as I barely know what I am doing now! Thanks for all the replys!!!
