I've got a plan . . . Nay, my brothers, I have a DREAM!
I've had my 'parts jeep' for a while now, and I've been thinking about doing something drastic. I'd like to cut the top off...from the windshield to the tailgate. I figured I'd leave the door frame (2 door '79 Cherokee BTW) but cut under the side windows, all the way to the back. It appears there are some 'seams' I'd like to take advantage of. The point is not to have an on-again-off top. However, I'd like to put rubber strips or something over the exposed cuts to seal out H20.
The end result would look something like a truck, but with nothing b/w the 'bed' and the 'cab'.
What do y'all think? Has it ever been done before?
Possible...impossible...ugly...stupid...ingenius?
Thanks as always for your input.

I would imagine it would look like a J-truck with a soft camper shell. I think it would look pretty sweet. I've actually thought about that once myself but I figured it would be too much for a novice welder.

If you're handy with fiberglass, why not hunt down a top from an early 70's bronco or blazer and fit it to size after you chop it up ? That would give you a removeable hardtop for rainy season or snow season

Y'know..... I think Chevy did something like that... it's called the "Avalanche"... I actually though about it too..... but I'll settle for a T-Top or BIG sunroof

I like the "Bob Barry Safari Roof" conversion myself. When I have enough $$ stockpiled  for working out a canvas top for the opening, I'll do it. Some LWB Rovers come with a Safari roof....I'll have to see how they work.
P.S. Go look at David Allens Cherokee...I think it's in the readers rigs or you can see it here (http://www.davidallenracing.com)

Thanks Freak,
I did a double take when I saw yours, I've been using that handle for about a year and a half and you are the first person I've seen with anything close. My buddy sent me that sight cuz I'm looking for a J series P/U and he thought the Cherokee looked sweet.

That's about what I'm thinking, Mula. I'm wondering if I'll find a leak-proof way of sealing the top back, later. That's secondary, though.
Once I get started, I'll post the operation Bob Barry-style.
Thanks for the leads, guys!!!

Awww, now look what you guys have done, you've got me thinking again about modifications. I'll never get sleep again :D Seriously I was considering putting a cage in the back of my J-truck along with seats and a soft top for wheeling, that was before I decided to go with the Cherokee I bought. I REALLY LIKE the chopped Cherokee look, nice big beefy rollcage, cool tire mount...........
Someday :(

i'm thinking about cuting the roof off right behind the drivers seat, moving the tailgate and manual rear window to this position and then a targa top. with a full cage. i think that would be the way to go as well as bobing the rear end. with the targa top you could have the open air feal in the sumer with the rear window rolled down and a closed rig for the winter without all the air gaps.

Or better yet, why not fab the FSJ bed for the rear soft top for bronco/blazer.
Kayline is back in business as Specialty Tops and makes soft tops for both.

Now wouldn't that look sharp on the back of a chero!

I would go for it ;) i cut the top off my parts wag and put it on my extra truck bed for a camper or what ever. had to cut 6in out the length of it and add 1in in the front to the post then welded it to a piece of angel iron so i could take it off plus opening doors at both ends.still working on the front door.
