The edelbrock 1406 (650 cfm, elec. choke) is a popular swap, if you want to change to a standard 4 barrel carb. You will need a new manifold as well, but the performance benefits are worth the extra $200. Gas mileage stays more or less the same, depending on how heavy your foot is. Opening up the edelbrock vs. holley is a real can-o-worms, soon to be a Topic of the Month discussion, if anyone is interested.

I'm running a 600 Holley with a manual choke on my Jeep and it works great on and off road.

I'll second the usability of the 600cfm Holley; I DID have to fine tune it to get it run well, though, while others have claimed that they just bolted an Edelbrock on that ran well right out of the box.

Sounds like the edelbrock 1406 is right up your alley then. its great for the hiway, and still does pretty good offroad. You will need a intake to go with it. You can go with a performer intake from edelbrock, which is designed for use witht he performer carb and performer cam. or just a stocker intake. Up to you.

I personally love my carb and intake.

1st you need to consider whether or not emmisions inspection is a factor. If so, does it have to be stock? If so, then rebuild the stock carb. If not, but tailpipe emissions are checked, then you need to inquire with knowledgeable people in your area, (tune-up shops are a good start), as to whether other than stock carbs will pass for your particular vehicle. If yes, then pick one that is known to pass. The Autolite/Motorcraft 2 bbl carbs., (2100/2300?), are one of the best 2 bbl carbs around. Good for both on and off-road with good economy. If you have stock 2 bbl intake manifold, then cost would be minimal to rebuild one or buy a rebuilt one. If you want to spend $450 or so, you can get the Edelbrock Performer 4 bbl intake and Carter 500 or 600 cfm AFB, it's clone, the Edelbrock Performer or a 600 cfm Holley, (this would be my order of preference for the lesser expensive 4 bbl carbs). If you want the best 4 bbl carb, then go with a Edelbrock Q-Jet #1904 for another $200 over the Carters/Edelbrock Performers/Holleys. I run the Edelbrock Q-Jet #1904 on both my Jeeps. Q-Jets will tollerate almost any angle without flooding/stalling. They are also referred to as hill-billy fuel injection.
