I was out four wheelin the other night with some friends, and i put it into emergency drive to climb this big steep hill and now i cant get it to come out of emergency drive... Ive tried everything, but nothing works. Well now i have gone all around town looking for a solution but i cant find one. I have a 79 Full size Jeep Cherokee 2 door with a single speed transfer case. It had a 2 speed transfer case but it was removed and a single was put in for whatever reason before i bought it. While i was under the jeep i noticed 3 vaccume lines going to the transfer case, but only 2 are hooked up and there is no visible place to hook the third. Im in urgent need of help because this is my only transportation at the moment and i know soon the gearbox will go out on the road, along with my U joints.... If anyone can help please email me or reply to this post. I will check both twice a day untill i can get it figured out. Thank you. e-mail addy is slugger_420@hotmail.com

Welcome.
I believe the TC should have a vacuum motor similar to the later model. That's where the lines connect from the dash or glove box switch. One should go to the front and the other to the rear of the motor.
The vacuum motor and linkage should be free but sometimes they get rusted or gunked up and will not move.
Check that out and also you could remove both lines and plug them . As soon as you remove them the motor should release if it was stuck with vacuum. Try pushing and pulling gently on the linkage off of the vacuum motor.
Good luck smile.gif

BTW, the third line is for the vent on the transfer-case to the engine compartment, which was only used on the '79. The earlier QT's had a vent right on the case.

Try driving an 'S' shape in reverse...

I happen to have a lo-range unit for your t-case... $25 plus shipping, and it's a bolt on operation to install....

You should have three vacuum lines going through the firewall for the e drive switch, and two of these attach to the switch, one attaches to manifold vacuum. You must have vacuum to move the mode of the case from lock to unlock.

Try backing up, and rolling forward and everything else. You are in neutral when you try to switch? And the knob is tight on the switch? If the plastic knob is loose the knob will turn but the switch won't, making it seem like you switch when you haven't.

If all else fails, mark the position of the front driveshaft, and remove it, so long as you STAY in edrive til you figure out why it won't shift.

Good luck,

Daniel

If you have 3 vacuum lines going to the transfercase, I believe you have 1 too many. One should be a vent hose. It may be that the vent hose was hooked up to the vacuum motor instaed of the vacuum hose. The shifter for E-drive must be moved into gear by vacuum and moved out of gear by vacuum. Start the truck, position the switch to disengage E-drive and get under the truck and check that extra hose for vacuum.

It may be a simple fix.

It is a Service Manual from Jeep. Anything you need info on I or others here that have these manuals can post the info.

the other way is to reach for the vacuum diaphragm, then disconnect the from most hose.... (there should be no hissing....)

then reconnect when you are back to unlocked

or you could pull it from under the dash.... but i do not know which one it would be

Soakem in pb blaster... Then you take the long part of the axle lay it on a piece of wood and while holding the stubshaft hit the yoke meat on the long end HARD...Repeatedly...

Take the axle in and have it pressed out. Usually I drive them out with a hammer and drift pin, and press then in with a vise. Might be an idea to buy the axle joint where they have a press and have them install it for you, usually an extra $5.00 or so.
