Mike D, My 230 in my truck seems to run smooth at all reasonable RPM's. Something must be up... Hope this helps...

Mike,
Always wanted one with the 230 I think most people just tear them out. How do you like yours?
Mines not driven much. Just enough to circulate it's juices occasionally but it runs smooth throughout the rpm range.

Its a bit rough......back firing a bit...not alot.
Its odd running...not quite smooth,,,, but not rough either.......
Do any of you guys use aftermarket ignition stuff...i have a msd on it....it helpe at first..... might be some of the problem, not sure.
My compression is good all across...not a one under 130psi... i should check it again tomarrow.
Im thinking that it might be the harmonic balancer or a bad bushing/motor mount, might be the one bushing that is next to the transfercase gone out.
And anyone know where to get wide feeler gauges...id like to set the rockers to speck on the OHC.......
all iv found local is those 1/4" ones in a swivel pack.
Ever have your valve cover off...the rocker arms where rideing on the cam is kinda wide.

all iv found local is those 1/4" ones in a swivel pack.Mine are all about 1/2" wide and I have one set that's made for adj valves that are sorta in a lazy "L" shape rather than the conventional flat. I've had them a long time and more than likely prolly got them at NAPA or some such place. Check with a place that sells Mac/Proto or similar tools. Guess if all else falls you could dip into your kids college fund, wipe out a semester or so and buy some from Snap-On. :(

Is your timing set right? That can cause backfiring if not adjusted right.

Well with no mark on the harmonic balancer..... its kinda hard to be sure.

I suppose that would make it kinda tough. Hmm...sounds like a timing thing to me but it could be other stuff.

If all you want is a few sizes, look at J&L or MSC, and order up some steel
shim stock in the thickness you want, that will get you some 6"X12" feeler

When I picked up my truck last summer the engine was 1/2 way torn down and in a heated shop. It's all there but the carb and flywheel from what I can tell. I've kept it lubed, the crank and pistons rotate smoothly and there was even very little carbon build up. The head was removed, but complete. There were compression figures written on the hood which would have been low (100-140) if they were for that engine and they were taken by somebody who knew how to take a correct reading.
I've got the air cleaner, manifolds (exhaust is cracked but weldable, most likely) alternator, water pump etc.
With the shape it appears to be in I would think new rings a hone, cleaned up valves (new seals) and bearings, etc. would get it running fairly cheap.
I'm only asking $50 and I'd trade parts.
Can send decent pics on anything you want to see.

Mike, you're on the dry side and Elliot's just over Stevens Pass(hwy 2) on the wet side. If you guys don't work something out drop me an email. For $50 I wouldn't mind getting Elliots 230 stuff and do a leasurely rebuild rather than disable my Wag. I'm prolly shooting myself in the foot here but for what he's asking...go for it. smile.gif

I'm just East of Everett, off HWY 2... between Monroe and Everett. They keep the pass open all year.

Heck, just swap me a decent center console/armrest or something. I'd like to see it go to somebody can put it to use.
