After the first of the year I will be dropping a reman. motor in the wag. and the question is I can get one with something called A.I.R. which I presume is air injection reactor or without. The differance in cost is five bucks. But if I go the non emissions control route, will it cost me more in lets say performanc or even worse a fine for non-compliance? All the headache of having to worry about hooking all this stuff back up would be nice to avoid but I don't want to do without if it is something that I would be better off having. O.K. all you vets, what to do? smile.gif

If you dont have emissions where you are now, then I would not worry about installing emissions. Besides your rig is 25 years old and is probably exempt from emissions.

Well, besides the fact that all FSJ V-8's had an AIR system, dating back to the Kaiser days, there is no actual difference in the long-block between an AMC V-8 that would use A.I.R. and one that wouldn't. You can call the remanufacturer to ask the precise difference.

I guess the big question is are you ever going to need the emissions stuff? If so the go with the emission version, if not the go with the non-emission one.

TINMAN ... Ya better check with your local smog guy! I moved from CA to AZ and I STILL HAVE TO HAVE SOME SMOG EQUIP! My FSJ is a '76 also. I may have found a way around it though... :D I found(& bought) a propane conversion kit. It's actually a selectable dual fuel system. However, when the ref gets a peek it will only have the propane half hooked up. I have found a lot about propane/lpg lately so this was an awesome find cuz they ain't cheap new! I have to do some extra verification research to make sure you can run propane through high-flow catalytics. I should still be able to pass the visual test, for the most part, with the EGR and some other hoses. The smog pump will be there for inspection but will be replaced with one mod or another after the initial peek see.
I guess through all of this rambling is double check your sources so you don't get poked in the eye. :eek:Once the ref has a hold of you... dun duh dun dun duunnnnn!
Good Luck, Keith a.k.a.
